I bought them for my interior doors to keep our one-year-old out of the bathroom and bedroom, and they worked perfectly. I didn't expect them to be as large as they are, but it turned out to be a good thing.
The latch has a nice thickness to it, and it's strong enough for my needs. The issue is that the screws that came with it are completely useless. They remove the phillips head, bend, and/or snap it before even getting halfway in. I used every screw they came with (16) just to get four in and hold them tight enough to make sure the latches themselves worked; I'll try to get them out tomorrow after I get new screws.
The thickness and weight of these surprised me. Installing it was a breeze. A longer screw would be preferable for added security, but the ones included are sufficient. I'm very pleased with my purchase, as I was expecting light-duty metal hooks because I don't require anything more substantial. These have already withstood my 175-pound Dane pounding on the door in vain attempts to open it!.
These hook and eye latches were far superior to anything I could have found at my local hardware store. The hardware is extremely durable. I didn't use the screws that came with the kit; instead, I used screws that I already had. Because the included screws are small, I set them aside for a future project. If I run out, I'll definitely order more of this product.
It works fine, but I was under the impression that there was a plastic piece in the hook receptacle to prevent rattling when the hook was inserted. In pictures, it appeared to be that way. br>This was also used on a wooden garden shed door to keep it open and keep it from slamming shut in the wind. To increase the strength of the package, the tiny screws were replaced with a nut and bolt set. br>However, it functions as intended, causing minor irritation when the hook rattles in the receptacle.
I bought a four-pack of stainless steel gate hooks and used the first one to latch open a barn door. The eye is attached to the outside of the barn door that swings open to the post, and the hook is attached to a post outside the barn. Weather is not an issue because all materials are stainless steel, and the heavy gauge, 3/16" rod used to make the hook will certainly withstand the force of the wind. (Because my mounting locations were thick, I ended up using mounting screws that were twice as long as the kit's, which were sized for standard 3/4" material. ) ) Not that it matters in my case, but the hook is actually quite nice, very shiny, and even has four turned grooves.
This was the solution to my chicken run door blowing shut in the wind when the birds are allowed to roam freely. My husband and children were ripping standard eye hooks out of the wood. So far, they've been able to withstand their carelessness.
Not at all long lasting.
