Questions & Answers

Is there a link or should I include a message with my order for three keyed alike? Please accept my sincere gratitude! ?

So I went around in circles with help (granted, this is a difficult question). However, I was told that they couldn't pick boxes with matching key codes.

Before ordering 3, I want to double-check that it's the right one. No visible screws, a deadbolt, and key entry on both sides? Outdoor iron gates require this. ?

For iron gates, this is definitely not the right lock. br>While the lock is of lower quality, the grade 2 B252 series is far superior. br>While it is a double cylinder lock that requires a key to open on both sides, the screws are visible on one side, making it simple to disassemble. br>Schlage also has products that are better suited to iron gates. br>As another commenter suggested, I don't recall any concealment "plugs" for the screws on this particular lockset.

Is it possible to use a 2 1/8" hole saw to install this?

Yes. I used a hole saw to put in a wood, vinyl clad, and two aluminum clad doors, but the steel cladding ruined my hole saw when I thought my fifth door was aluminum clad. I finished by cutting the cladding with a sharpened wood chisel, following the grove in the cladding left by the hole saw. When the cladding circle was removed, I used a new hole saw to bore through the inner wood, being careful not to cut into the steel on the other side, but leaving a partially drilled center hole so that I could properly line up the center to remove the steel cladding on the other side. I used the ruined hole saw to mark the circle on the other side and was able to use "airplane" snips to cut out the hole, smoothing it with a Dermal abras A contractor would probably have a diamond hole saw that would slice through the steel cladding like butter, but I had time and figured it out.

Is there a set of steel sheet screws included in the package for mounting the deadbolt to a steel (rather than a wooden) door? If so, what kind of screws do you have on hand?

As with all deadbolts, the screws connect the two sides. Is it the screws that hold the deadbolt latch in place that you're referring to? Only wooden ones, I believe, were available.

However, if your deadbolt knob won't turn, that's a problem
5/5

"Do not use keys," it says cryptically in the installation instructions, as if that makes sense without context. (Are you sure you don't use it all the time? during that particular stage? Throughout the installation process? ) So, after a lot of cursing, I figured out what was going on. br>br>The flat bar piece that passes through the deadbolt and is actuated on the other side by the knob must remain in its general position. The flat bar should be kept as far turned counter-clockwise as possible, as shown in the attached photo. When viewed from this vantage point, it should be rotated as much as possible clockwise. Otherwise, you might find yourself in a situation where the knob won't turn the deadbolt unless the key is in and partially turned, and you won't be able to "lock" it and remove the key; instead, you'll only be able to "unlock" it. br>br>Once I figured that out, there were no problems, but the instructions REEEEALLY need to clarify this. I didn't even use the key; instead, I turned the flat bar piece during the inspection and installation process, which caused my issue. It's inexcusable that you've had to go through this. So, Schlage, why did this happen to me? I didn't buy some cheap Chinese product where the technical writers' English is an unsolvable mystery.

The B60 series used to be very good deadbolts, but they are now insecure
3/5

They had precision brass key cylinders as well as an anti-theft device. Shield should be chosen. However, in order to reduce costs (but not prices), Allegion made several design changes that were detrimental to the product. br>br>The first redesign used a much softer alloy to replace the brass cylinders. The lock will become grainier and easier to pick as a result of this. The metal shield was removed after the next redesign. br>Turning the key feels like dragging a shovel through sand. br> This is the so-called "Snap'n'Stay" anti-theft device. Shield should be chosen. This was a crucial security feature because it prevented ice-pick attacks on the deadbolt mechanism. Despite the fact that the original Schlage B60 was a fantastic deadbolt, the "new" version is an insecure, poorly constructed product that is only marginally better than cheap deadbolts.

The B60N series offers good quality, but it suffers from poor cost-cutting decisions
3/5

This is Schlage's best-selling product. the- Residential lock with a line, first released in 2016 or early 2017. It has several security features designed to thwart brute force attacks such as hammers, pipe wrenches, and "bumping," and has received many positive reviews in this regard; however, the B60N has an aluminum alloy core and bible rather than a traditional brass core and bible, which was a huge disappointment. And you can tell as soon as you put the key in and turn it. The mechanism is clumsy and prone to jamming, and while I haven't done any long-term testing, I don't expect it to get any smoother over time; additionally, instead of Schlage's traditional "SC" type keyway, this lock has a very open and exposed keyway. As a result, I'm returning this lock and replacing it with a Schlage B560 series lock. The B560 is a commercial-grade lock with many of the same security features as the B60N series, but with six key pins instead of five and a price difference of only $15. The B560 isn't available at your neighborhood hardware store, but it is available at a number of online retailers. Shops that sell line locks (ask around for the best deals).

When it comes to exterior doors, Grade 1 is the way to go, but remember to upgrade the strength of your strike plate as well
5/5

I chose this after reading numerous locksmith reviews and Consumer Reports' recommendations. I'd like a Grade 1 lock on all of my doors, and this one is nice and sleek, and it only took 5 minutes to install. br>br>If your strike plate is weak, it doesn't matter how good your deadbolt is. With a swift kick, you can remove the entire door jamb/frame. I plan on obtaining a full-time position. strike plate length (3-4) 4 feet) and use 3" screws to keep it in place because it's screwed into a stud at multiple points rather than just a thin strip of wood. For the time being, I'm going to use the strike plate that came with it and 3" screws.

One of the screw covers does not cover the screw completely
5/5

We bought this to replace our front door's deadbolt. We have a sweet son with a variety of diagnoses who has no risk assessment ability, little impulse control, and a complete inability to comprehend and thus navigate safely the dangers of the streets outside of our house at this time; to put it bluntly, if we didn't have some way of keeping him inside that he couldn't defeat, he'd probably not survive alone outside of our house. We had a gate blocking the front door that he couldn't open because his fine motor wasn't developed enough, but he's grown strong enough to rip it out of the wall mounts, and he's recently gained the ability to undo the chain we had as a backup. We replaced the deadbolt with this as a backup layer of protection for him because he can't pick out a specific key matched to a specific lock from a line up, much less get one inserted in a lock. We chose this color because it goes well with the rest of our hardware. br>br>The setup was simple enough; my husband took care of it. Both of the keys that came with it work, and we were able to duplicate the key to give to our daughter. I've had a few lock keys that were difficult to duplicate. Yes, such a thing does exist. My only caveat is for those of you who are extremely picky about aesthetics. There are small metal caps that go over the screws to conceal them and make the lock more appealing. Take note of the visible crescent moon of screw underneath the cap on the right hand one. So, this could be due to a number of factors; however, I did double-check that the screw was properly installed. The whole appears to be slightly larger on that side. Given what you now know about my son, I'm sure you can understand why I didn't take that into account. I've got a lot more important issues that this lock is currently helping me with, and it could be the ugliest thing in the world, but as long as it keeps him safe, it'll be a 5 star lock system in my book. And the vast majority of people are unlikely to notice. Unless you're a little like me and it practically calls out to you every time you walk past it; ) In which case, all I can say is that, while I'm not sure how common this situation is with this lock model, it's exactly what happened to us. But at this point, every hair on his head is safe, so it's still a 5 star lock in my book.
