Unfinished Baltic Birch plywood is used for this project. A stain can be applied to the wood. One disadvantage of staining plywood is that it will show the veneers along the plywood edges. In order to make the piece look more uniform, some people stain the piece and then paint the edges with a close shade of the stain.

If you feel the need to stain, you can, you must understand that the piece is plywood and the sides will show the ply lines, which some stains accentuate. There are people who get away with painting the side of a piece a solid color and staining it. When you find or mix a color very close to the top, it's hard to tell the difference between the two.
