The boards are stacked on top of one another. For two boards, it was a very close fit. I used it once and saw a pro lite bag that one of my friends had. I traded in my saline for a pro lite, which is a far superior bag for two boards. A higher standard.
It all depends on how bulky you consider something to be. It's a travel bag, so it's a little bulkier than a day bag, which is understandable; however, it's not as bulky as a coffin bag, and it's not as thin as a day bag. So, I suppose you could use it as a day bag if you wanted to, especially if you wanted to bring a couple of boards with you.

The bag is fantastic. The quality is excellent, and there is a good amount of padding. I'd recommend it to anyone planning a trip outside of the country. I was even able to cram three boards into this bag.
This bag was purchased for the purpose of transporting two surfboards to Costa Rica. I ordered the 7'6" and read that some people had used three boards. I could barely get the 7'2" board in with towels and padding. For the 5'10" board, I had to order a smaller bag, which is of excellent quality but not as large as I had hoped.
For the flight from SAN to Honolulu via SFO, I used this bag to transport my Firewire Spitfire 6'2" and Firewire El Tomo 5'11". Both boards are undamaged because I protected the tails and noses. Because the bag was too tight around the center, I was concerned that there would be insufficient protection on the rails. They only just fit, but there are no visible flaws!.
