The tool is well-made, as is typical of Park. This is extremely helpful, if not essential, if you want to adjust or remove mavic spoke nipples that haven't been touched in a few years. It provides the leverage and precise fit on the nipple splines that are required to turn the nipples without stripping them. It's best to just break a ceased nipple free with this method. After that, if you want to true the wheel or remove the spoke, you'll need the basic Mavic spoke nipple tool. The tool cannot rotate 360 degrees because of its length. Because it will not pass the adjoining spoke, it must be constantly removed and reinstalled to the nipple every 1/2 turn. It would have been better if it was short enough to rotate 360 degrees, but then you'd lose some of the leverage provided by the longer tool.
My Mavic rims, which are 18 years old, fit perfectly. My bike had been in a minor accident, and the front rim had been messed up, so I had to true it up. I had the spoke holder, but I needed a spoke wrench to keep it from twisting. After reading a few reviews that said it would fit some Mavic spokes but not all, I decided to take a chance on this one and it worked out perfectly. Rim appears to be in perfect condition.
There's enough room for a second version. This is an outstanding tool. Would be nice if it had a chamfered edge for the price to make seating on the spline easier - however, I really like the weight and length of it - truing a wheel, for example, makes it extremely precise. It's my first time using Mavic's "system," and I must say that I like it a lot - This made it a breeze; I didn't even have to dismount the wheel to adjust the dishing and a couple of wobbly bits.
Adjust the tension in the bladed spokes of Mavic wheels with this handy tool. For the same purpose of spoke adjustments, I also bought a Park Tool Bladed Spoke Holder.
I have a set of Ksyrium ES special anniversary edition SSC wheels from around 2006. The nipples have six splines and are 5 inches long. Splines have a diameter of 65mm on the outside. As one would expect from Park Tools, this is a high-quality tool with a nice heft and finish.
On my Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels from 2006, it worked perfectly.
It perfectly fits the Mavic exclusive spoke nuts. 100% better than the plastic tool included with every new wheel set by Mavic.
It works fine as a spoke wrench - The Ksyrium SLS wheels, however, are not compatible. My older Ksyrium Elite wheel sets were the only ones that would fit. I'm not sure which tool to get for the newer SLS wheels at this point. The plastic wrenches that came with the Elite are actually nicer than this metal wrench, so I gave it three stars because it doesn't fit the SLS wheels.
