It's easy to use and of good quality! I used it at camp and in my backyard fire pit, and the metals didn't warp even when exposed to extreme heat. The only issue I had was that when I tried to cook hot dogs, the sausages rolled and fell into the pit unless the grill was set up perfectly flat.
For camping, I was considering purchasing one of those "folding / simple to assemble" grills - Those who continue to post ads on Facebook. All I really want is a clean grate for the campfire (some campgrounds only have a fire pit with no grate - ugh). Some have a large grate, while others don't. nasty, rusted, or where things fall through, and so on). This ended up being a fantastic solution. Adjusting the height is a bit difficult - It is, in a sense, what it is. The importance of the bag cannot be overstated. It becomes sooty and greasy. It's easy to clean at home or if you have a camp sink (with a green pad), and it's big enough for a group of people. So far, the durability has been good. It's too heavy to take on a hike, but it's perfect for car camping. Stainless steel with a high corrosion resistance. Anything that is described as "lightweight" will not last long.
So, after looking at a number of portable grill grates on this site, I was concerned about the quality of the majority of them. Either they appeared to be cast iron but were actually painted metal that melted away in the heat, or they were shoddy steel that simply planed melted and rusted apart on hinges. br>br>While we've only used it once, it's held up well to heat, stayed upright, and hasn't let us down in terms of quality. br>br>The only thing that could make it better is if it sat a few inches higher. br>br>Cooking over coals is probably best for spreading heat evenly and keeping food away from the heat if you want a slower cooking time; if you build a fire, make sure it is spread out evenly underneath it BEFORE you add the food. Otherwise, because the grate is too close to the wood underneath, you'll end up with ash all over your grub. br>When you want to raise the temperature without stirring up ash, start with good coals glowing underneath from burned wood, and then add smaller sticks atop the coals. The grate is large enough that we could cook four hamburgers of about grocery-store quality on it. 5 large brats and about 4 hot dogs were done at the same time, and there was enough room to move things on and off of the higher heat areas as needed. br>br>The carrying case made it easy to store this, stack it, and keep it dry during transit or storage at the camp site; the case isn't made of the best materials or quality, but it gets the job done. The one advantage is that once it's cool, I don't see why not toss it into said bag, even if it hasn't been scrubbed. Simply store it away from the elements until you need it again.
The grill itself is adequate; it does the job. Some of the cuts on the steel are crooked and rough, implying a problem with quality control. On one, a person's hand could be cut. The bag, on the other hand, reeked of chemicals. I didn't want to put anything I was cooking on into it because it was so bad. I put it in the washer. Even after 5 gentle cycles, there was still a strong chemical odor. I then noticed that, despite being set to gentle, the machine had ripped the bag. I finally gave up and tossed the bag out the window.
Very nice. sturdy - The metal appears to be of good gauge. When it comes to durability (or whether it corrodes), only time will tell.
It's the ideal size and is incredibly convenient to use and transport!.
