How can I get my layout clean and to stay nice and fresh? Can it be machine washed and dried?

Because the fabric is felt, I don't recommend machine washing it. The felt won't last in the washer and would clump and get a lot of lint. The best way to dry them is to air dry them after hand washing.

What about the reverse side? Is it just solid felt like the front? Are there no graphics there?

There is shed and pulling

Due to its poor quality, this felt does not last long. The hair is being pulled and shed. Where the shoe and the bank cards go and where the felt balls go, I continuously pick them off the layout. I am disappointed.
