It is wired from a 12volt Minn Kota trolling motor with a yellow leads to a red lead for a positive I use a black lead when the blue blue lead is not needed.
There is no way to replace the wires with a thinner gauge, but you can splice a thinner gauge to the current wires.

Excellent! I was able to use my Motorguide Xi5 without any issues. Using just the yellow and black wires will work for motors running on 12 volts. In addition to the blue wire, you will also need the 24v wire. You will find instructions in the document.
