It doesn't realize how light it is without a cat in the carrier, but I have the large and it hardly weighs anything without a cat. I think carrying even an empty overnight bag or backpack would be similarly heavy as carrying an empty overnight bag. The weight of the product is very low. It is now a year old for my cat and even though he still fits into the large carrier, it is not as big as it used to be. If I were you, I would recommend going with the large size, but I am not sure what you are looking to put in the carrier.
As for the floor, it is stiff - it has a stiff, removeable carpet - plus the top is also stiff In the bottom there is a pad similar to this. I even got a question from my veterinarian about where I got it. One of my cats sleeps in it all the time. This is a reliable carrier that I highly recommend.
