Is this used by ants as well, because every time the birds make their nests with sticks, the ants take over. Do ants seem to be attracted to this material?

There is a high likelihood that ant infestations are caused by sugar liquid contained in hummingbird feeders. When ants locate sugar sources, they search for nesting material because their nests will probably require such material. It is suggested to separate nesting material and the source of bird food by several feet.

That's what I was looking for to keep my humingbird family and others warm and During the night, I put out a nice ball of this cotton hanging from It was all devoured within a week by the birds. The hint is The hummers seem to be struggling to carry much weight, so it would be better to break it down into smaller pieces. When they came to my nest, I noticed that they left a trail through the leaves. There are a lot of smaller pieces of cotton and they are soft and easy to break. The rest is up to you. It seems to be a hit with them. The hanging plants have since been used to place smaller pieces of cotton on the shoots, and I've found that it holds the cotton better and is better because it's below the eaves.

These grapevine balls have been stuffed with this and the birds do use them. While some of it falls on ground during heavy rain, it quickly dries out and am easily picked up by birds.

We use this nesting material in our backyard because the birds love it. As we watch them take it away to their nests and birdhouses, we see how quickly they are able to consume it.
