Questions & Answers

Do I need to know the size of my shirt?

Your chainsaw blade packaging will inform you if it has been manufactured to 7/32 or 5/32, and the pitch of the chain is usually engraved on it to indicate either 14.6 inches or 38.1 inches of chain. In order to submit these pitches, you will need a 5/32 file. This file has a size of 3/16 in the case of 325. You will need 7/32 if you get 404. The file size listed on the packing will be your best guide. I have four packages containing chain, and each one appears to specify the

Would anyone be able to provide me with some advice about which of these to purchase for my McCulloch MC4218AV The answer to your question is I don't know. It was a pleasure working with ?

For this chainsaw, you will need to specify the chain you are using. The chain pitch can be determined by measuring the rivet length on the drive teeth, not by measuring the chain raker numbers. However, it is more reliable to measure the chain pitch by measuring the chain raker numbers on the drive teeth. An example of a chain link with a long rivet. In order to divide by ten, you will have to measure the distance over 10 links, convert the number to a decimal value, and then divide by 10 again. Round down the result to the next lower value due to the stretching that occurs with a well-used chain. Chainsaw links are typically 0 inches in length for handheld chain saws. The distance between 250" and zero is It is equal to 325", which is It is important to note that in order to use this sharpening tool, your chain must have "a full complement" of cutter teeth, meaning there must be double the amount of drive teeth as there are cutter teeth. The engine on chainsaws retrofitted with a longer chain bar than the original design is often not powerful enough to draw a greater number of teeth engaged in cutting wood at once. The tool relies on the full spacing between cutters to support and position the files it is equipped with. Then selected and activated it can be used to improve user experience The best tool I've found (as opposed to a chain grinder that costs $1000+) for sharpening saw chains is this one.

Are there new files that need to be created?

There is an eventual loss of sharpness for all files, and eventually the files This tool has a flip up top that allows you to easily remove the files and switch them out with any standard chain file. The top won't close if the files are inserted backward, so it will not work if the files are completely backward. It is pretty easy to tell when you need to replace the files when they do not cut into the chain but just glide over it. It might be of some help to you.

I have an Echo CS590 and I was wondering if this would work for it. Can you provide me with a chain of 070 3/8?

No, this sharpener has a pitch of If you want 3/8, you should type 404. You can't get this sharpener in 3/8 pitch so using a 7/32 file isn't an option, but you can get it in 3/8 which uses a 13/64 file, which works for your Echo 590 and is close enough.

You did a great job
5/5

When I read some other reviews of this product, I was curious, but I also needed a tool that could do more than one thing. I have several saws I use and I use chain 3/8 inch on all of them. As part of the Oregon and Carlton chains, I use In my experience, once you have sharpened about half of the tooth away, the depth gauge (raker) in front of each tooth is too high and thus will prevent the sharpened tooth from taking a bite, so these must be filed to the correct height for the chain to operate. If the chain is too high, it won't cut, and if the chain is too low, it will bite too much, and the chain may break, and this is what we A few strokes from a Pferd tool allows the tooth to be sharpened and the depth gauge to be lowered at the same time according to the tooth height of the chain. Oak blows like it's brand new when the chain blows through it. The impression I received was very positive. Two of its files are round, while one is somewhat square. The round files may be standard length, while the square file is likely a specialized item not commonly found in hardware stores, but it can be purchased A chain's sharpening angle is 30 degrees, and it is not adjustable, since this is what most chains are milled to in any case. I am not sure you can simply switch out the file size for smaller chains, the tolerances seem pretty tight and any misalignment could result in a broke chain chewing through a body part. So, get this tool for convenience, wear your safety gear, and go cut some wood.

I have no doubt that this is the best guide/sharpener I've ever You should buy it
5/5

The time period. I have no doubt that this is the best guide/sharpener I've ever My first reaction was to be skeptical that this would be anything more than "just another" This thing absolutely nails it from the designer's perspective. Any other guide you have will probably be tossed in the trash after reading this. The Husqvarna roller guide and Oregon tool that clips on to your round file are thrown straight in the trash. It makes the GRANBER jig that works flawlessly seem outdated and overly complicated, and sharpening saw chains is not something that is complex. It seems that at least 99% of these devices make things way more complicated than they should. Moreover, you will also be able to experience the excellence that Pferd files offer, which if you haven't experienced them before, you will be AMAZED by their sharpness and durability. Ultimately, the guide provides everything a user could ever hope for in a file guide, from a simple file guide that permits cutting to rake to raking tools which have been filed appropriately relative to each other. You do not need to set it up AT ALL, there are NO gimmicks. I don't understand anything. There is a saying you could hear from the sawyer vets "I file my chains by hand. ". This is something that you can certainly accomplish, especially if you are in the trade, but if you give this guide to the BEST hand filer and they insist this is anything but an improvement on hand filing, they are The file strokes are kept in check in the most basic way by using a guide. This is hand filing, but with a guide. Not that it physically controls anything, but rather it keeps you in check. In my opinion, this guide is as good as any that can be made for a chainsaw, blowing the competition out of the water There is a reason why this is 45 dollars.

My jaw dropped when I saw this! didn't expect much from this, since I bought it mostly just as a replacement handle for my existing file handle after it started to wear My work has involved cutting a LOT of wood over the past 30 years, so I have tried a variety of files and jigs
5/5

I have tried Dremel based stone sharpeners as well as rotary disc sharpeners, but both of these cannot be used outside of a benchtop environment, are inefficient at removing metal, and result in a slightly wrong shape on the teeth that is not very effective. When I tried the wobbly clamp the clamp seemed to bounce a lot Jigs that newbies start with, but usually end up throwing away because they are so difficult to use and too fragile to be carried in a field box without breaking. In the end, I end up carrying just three files a flat file, a round file and a handle that fits both when I'm out in You can imagine how many files it takes to wear out a handle completely. I decided to replace it with this one when my old handle started wearing out. My initial reaction to the all in one raker file was that it was "cute" and gimmicky, and I fully expected to have to pull it out whenever I needed As a result of my excessively aggressive filing style, I tend to have sharp edges on my rakers. The aim of my engine is not to produce fine sawdust but to "flow chip" from the saws exhaust port. So when I first used the file, I was shocked to find that it actually made contact with my rakers at the same depth as I would have filed them otherwise. Unfortunately, my freehand filling did not stay consistent, which surprised me as it meant I was not consistent at all. The good thing about consistency is that it is reliable. My half-marathon times may actually improve as a result of this file The chains are used! One chain a buddy sharpened is so crooked that it rolls lengthwise in a log of 18" diameter, so I may really challenge it to even the length two ways. We'll get that one out of the way. This is an unfair test!

So, how did it do (seven years of experience but without The sharpness of a chisel is Based on subjective grabbiness, I can get the teeth about 90% as sharp as I can. Since a true razor sharp tooth cuts one log great and then goes dull, that's probably the best way to go. There is a sharpness to this when it is fresh, and it should last a long time. Comfort If you are going to do 36" full tooth chains several times, most simple handles will bruise you. This handle is good thick and wraps well in my hands for great control (do remember, Angle reminders on the tool and even on the handles themselves confirm the correct angle is being used, so it is really easy to see. Obedience is all you need! When the chain is cut, how does it actually work? I take the time to use my old file and a bench, I can sharpen my blade as well as if I bought a brand new one. By carrying this in my pouch, I can touch up my blade in about half the time, and they work just as well when less ideally sat on the saw when Considering that I don't have new hands and this is still a freehand file, I am absolutely amazed by how much better this method Hence, this is a good file for beginners to learn on, and for more experienced users it will be quite fast. I just wanted to clarify a couple more things before buying the book. - 1) it holds two round rakes, one for each direction, as well as a flat file for ambidextrous rakes There is no simultaneous filing of two teeth with this device. This type of handle is uniquely compatible with only one diameter and one spacing of file teeth. If either of these do not match your chains, you should not use this. If the diameter files are the wrong size, it won't work properly. *3) although it takes standard 8" round files, I like the Pferd ones very much. With prices at only $1 each, they are a better alternative to junk than really cheap stuff. Be careful not to hobble.
