Up until I dropped a tree on a fence while I was working at the farm, I judged a tree's center of gravity by sight. I would sight with a plumb line. I might use a rope or cable, but I had no experience with felling wedges and hammers. It was 42' tall and 19" in diameter at breast height, and I wanted to get rid of it. Located 22 feet from the house, 10 feet from a stop sign, 10 feet from one street, 20 feet from another street, 20 feet from one dogwood, and 30 feet The tree fell with such little room for error that I had never done it before. A 21' pole saw was used to remove some limbs to make the table fit the available space. After calling 911, I had to make sure the car was parked accurately and without incident. During my reading on wedges, I learned a little more about them. normally make the back cut higher than the vertex of the notch, however one extension service said it's better to make the back cut at the same level as the notch. A disastrous error may be less likely to occur this way. The hinges on my cabinets used to be sawed slapdash.

This time I tied a string around the trunk to serve as a guide.

I started by cutting a horizontal line. By inserting a framing square, it would be easier for me to check my aim. When it reached 16" across, I cut a 4” deep cut at the center, then cut the bark 4" above it. A hinge should be 80% as wide as the diameter, so I stopped at 16". In order to extend the groove to both ends of the cut, I rotated the saw around each end. I used it as a guide when I cut a 45-degree angle Cuts that don't go too far but are at least 30 degrees deep. As long as the tree had fallen 45 degrees, the hinge would not break. Having my ten-year old daughter with me was definitely a joy The advantage of a big hammer is that it will drive wedges more efficiently while causing Starting with a 1-inch wedge, I then moved to a 2-inch wedge I wanted to see what a pound claw hammer would be like. It took three strikes for the wedge to be bruised. I stayed with the big hammer after that. Damage to the building was not further. When the back cut was nearing the notch, I would insert the framing square to check that both ends were equally close. My saw bar is only 16" long, so I inserted the framing square just as the back cut neared the notch. After the snow came to about 1" thick, there was a surprise Although the gusts weren't much more than ten mph, I was afraid of felling wedges, since I had never done it before. There was very little sawing left before the tree started falling as soon as the wedges were tapped. I aimed for a certain spot and it landed right there. In fact, I found out I had been a Nervous Nellie when I measured on the stump and did the math. 16" long and 3/4" thick, or 12 square inches, was the size of the hinge. On average, 6 tons of force can be applied per square inch to wood. One foot from the hinge was where the greatest pressure was applied to the wedges. There may have been enough strength in the hinge for it to be able to resist 72 foot-drops Lots of weight. With a bulldozer and cable, it would be very difficult to pull such a great distance. It is likely that the wedges were the weakest part of the system. It is possible that the strength would have been doubled if the load was distributed over four wedges instead of two. The wedges I should have known about long ago would have saved me a lot of time and trouble. I will save my rope for trunks that show signs of rot and for trunks that are too small to drive wedges behind with.

The purpose for which it is intended works well
4/5

The people who claim they were destroyed in one day do not seem to know what they are doing. In addition to the metal splitting wedges, are they using them as well? It did a great job of bucking up a 24" white oak that was lying on uneven ground. I just got these and I've used them for a few projects. If you use one of these plastic wedges, tap it in until it is A sledgehammer is not used to break them up in the same way as a metal splitting wedge would. I also have something to say to the folks who say they're There was a clear listing of the dimensions. I have no idea why you consider that a complaint,.

When it comes to tree work for a landowner It's crucial that you have them! There is no worry about actually getting them into the job and it is more reliable to get the tree planted where it needed to be
5/5

Nice price, nice size, and you don't have to worry about them actually getting into the job. Pros have the training and experience, but for those of us who have only the occasional tree to cut (and NOT one on the fence), I have been amazed at how much I rely on these units. They even come in handy when I'm bucking them. I know I don't use them properly all the time, but I don't mind them. There are times when you think you know which way the pressure is going, but getting pinched all the time was the norm for me. Those are great for times when you don't have the time to go and retrieve your saw and it is really easy to use them.

It is what it is

I can't say much more about these plastic felling wedges, what can I even say? It is hard to find a way to mess this up. Considering how hard this plastic is, it is likely to last for a long time. A few weeks ago, I cut down a tree that had a very small opening that I wanted to allow it to fall through, so I wedged it to encourage it to fall correctly. I found them to be very effective. They are prevented from backing out on their own by the small spikes on the flat of the wedge. I have used my sledge to leave marks on the back of a few of them as you can see in the photos. There is no way for me to know how long these would last in a professional setting. For the homeowner, I expect that the back end will eventually flare out with repeated pounding, but otherwise, these will last for a long time. One of the other photos demonstrates why plastic wedges should always be used instead of wood wedges. To fell trees, a metal one is needed. cut off the tip of the wedge with my chainsaw after nicking the corner of the wedge. I think this is an acceptable solution and it worked as it should have. Chainsaws and metal wedges don't mix well. It is important to keep in mind that they only have five years. Don't be surprised at their size, as they are just over 5 inches.

The last thing I want to do is become Although I did not buy , I did purchase The last thing I want to do is become When I was clearing my property, I had to cut down quite a few trees
5/5

I used these to do that. My bacon (and more importantly, the saw bar) has been saved more than a couple of times with their help. A pair of these behind my saw enabled me to guide the fall of a couple of the larger ones. In addition to trying to relieve the pressure binding up the chain several times, I also relied on something falling unexpectedly that relieved some of the pressure.

This is a convenient and effective tool for felling trees
5/5

This saw is small and light enough to carry around easily, but thick enough to keep the kerf open so the chain does not get tangled. A wedge has a smooth side and a barb on one side. The barbs help keep the wedge in place so it doesn't back out of the opening. Should you inadvertently come in contact with a wedge during a felling operation, you will be protected by the plastic sheet. To help drop a hundred pounds, I used all four My previous day, I cut half a foot of Ash (20" diameter at chest level) using the bore cut methd. I found this to be extremely useful.

You can put them in your pocket and they work great
5/5

In a nutshell, With these wedges, you can cut down trees with a diameter of 22" and below. You can easily fit 3 of them in your pocket because they are so small. Unlike metal wedges, if you hit them with your saw and break them they won't wreck your chain like a metal wedge might. These small wedges are excellent for home/farm/ranch owners if you happen to be cutting down relatively smaller trees. Larger wedges are good for professional loggers if they cut down trees with high trunks. Directional tree felling is made safer with them because they stay in place. Toward the end of this video, you can see a large Husqvarna wedge came out of the tree and fell onto the ground. The remaining two that stayed in place were these Timber Savage wedges with a height of 5". The loblolly pine pictured here was around 90 feet tall and around 35 years old.
