There is no way I can tell. As soon as I took them out of the package I didn't even notice the smell. Certainly, all new products will have a strong odor, but for me, I didn't notice any bad odor.
I knew I made a mistake as soon as I received this. This is a very pretty top, but it seemed impossible to wash. But the rest of the item and the mousepad it matched still looked grungy, so I decided to soak it in dish soap and warm water and wash it. The tape did not fall apart, but it also did not get clean. The fabric did air dry well, however.
The mouse wrist rest seems to have foam in it. I poked the keyboard one a little and it felt like it might have foam inside. There is a slight difference in the texture, but it's still very soft.
