Questions & Answers

Is this a true white blade, or is it a light gray? When I bought a tape measure, it was actually light gray. ?

It is not grey, but it is white. For me, the white background provides excellent visibility. I liked it so much that when I needed to replace my table saw tape, I went with their fastcap tape.

Is there a flat back version of this tape?

Yes, the flat back is useful for layouts where the tape does not need to be hidden. Be aware that if you extend it a long way (4' or more) and rewind it quickly, it has a tendency to whip and hit your hand (which hurts). It's great that you can draw on it with a pencil and then erase it.

Is this a class i, a class ii, or an unclassified tape measure? Unclassified tape measures, for example, do not meet any standards and cannot be relied upon for accuracy. ?

I've purchased several of these, the most recent of which was not accurate in terms of measurements. I'm not sure what class it belongs to, but I'm guessing it's not classified. They refused to refund or exchange the item.

What is the purpose of the small rocker button on the bottom of the hook, just behind the hook?

When you set it down and hook the other end of the tape to a board, the reel will not roll up the tape. It acts as a sort of lock, preventing the tape from being pulled back in by the spring. However, unless the tape is hooked on something, its weight is insufficient to keep it out. It will then remain.

The markings are nice, and I ended up buying two more tapes to go with my ten-year-old tape
3/5

For use in the shop, an old Craftsman 20' tape measure. The Tajima 16ft model, as well as the FastCap Lefty Righty model. Both have a 7/8" thick blade that can stand out 8' (the Craftsman's blade is wider). Both models are white with black lines (with the exception of the FastCap's 1/16 marks, which are red). While I prefer the FastCap markings, the Tajima's accuracy, as measured with a Starrett 36" steel rule, is spot on, even to the 1/32" marks, in contrast to the FastCap, which drifted nearly 1/16" by the 24" mark (it did begin to correct as I went further out, but never got "back on the mark"). Because both tapes have a bumper that prevents the hook from protruding past the end of the tape, catching the hook on a board is difficult. Both tapes have enough spring to retract back into their cases. A rubber shock-resistant case is also included on both. br>br>The Tajima is the clear winner if I want to be able to transfer measurements from tape to steel rule or have multiple people rely on measurements. It is the most accurate tape in my shop, with my 25' Stanley Powerlock coming in second (due to its size, I only use the Powerlock for construction). Because my eyesight isn't what it was 20 years ago, I prefer the large print. When the tape is pressed against a wall, it is just as accurate. br>br>The FastCap comes in handy when I need to quickly blank out my stock or when I'm alone in the shop. It's useful on the miter saw, and the lefty/righty feature allows me to take measurements from either end while keeping the numbers visible. It's also nice not to have to remember whether the small line was the 9/16th line or the 11/16th line; the FastCap has a little lever on the bottom that prevents the tape from retracting, but I rarely use it because I'm so used to pressing my index finger against the tape housing. I'm afraid the pencil sharpener is in the same boat. It's easier for me to just pull out my pocket knife and sharpen my tip than to remember that the tape measure has a sharpener built in.

I've never had a tape as good as this one
5/5

This tape has quickly become one of my favorites in the shop, and I have a lot of them. It's fantastic to finally be able to read a tape on the right-hand side as a lefty. I like that the measurements are clearly numbered down to a 1/16th of an inch (see photo) and that they are printed on the wrong side of the paper for the first time in my life. When fully extended, the recoil spring is very strong, and the tape is stiff. This is a fantastic tape in every way.

It's very nice, and it reads well on both sides! NOW THERE WILL BE NO MORE MISTAKES
4/5

Have you ever written 5/8 instead of 3/8 after reading a tape backwards? This tape prevents me from doing so. The markings aren't exactly my cup of tea; At 16" intervals, stud locations are clearly marked, but FOOT markings are small and difficult to distinguish from the rest of the markings. br>Other reviewers have expressed dissatisfaction with the durability so far. I like how well the mechanism works, how easily it retracts and how securely it locks. So there's a pencil sharpener-type device-type device-type device-type device-type device-type device-type device It won't fit a carpenter's pencil, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA What did they have in their heads? br>In response to a question about the case's width, here's a photo with approximate measurements (/-). 1/32). Different readings result from the odd shape, as shown in the detail. br>Overall, I like the lefty righty scale, but I'd prefer 1/16 in marks for the first 6 inches or so, as well as better foot indications. If it holds up for a while, the price is very good.

It's possible to make improvements
3/5

I really want to like these tapes, but the quality doesn't appear to be up to par. This is the second time I've bought this exact tape - The first simply stopped working altogether. This is the tape I use in my garage woodshop. I adore the tape readout. I'm a stickler for accuracy, so when I read a tape, I want to know which side of the 1/16 inch line I should cut on. That is why I adore this tape, but the quality of the mechanisms within it is subpar. My first one only lasted a few months, and now the tape's hold button on the bottom isn't holding it open. That button isn't something I use, but it does speak to the product's overall quality, and I'm hoping it holds up. BTW, the pencil sharpener on the tape is a great addition! If you're looking for a contractor-grade tape that can take a beating, I'd recommend getting a FatMax instead. Mine have been in use for more than a decade. br>br>I also have a FastCap flat back, but I rarely use it because, while the flat back is excellent, it is too flimsy to be useful.

Fastcap tape measures are nice rigid tapes in a small package, but they are hard to read and have quality issues
3/5

I want to like them because they are trying to innovate, but the quality just doesn't "measure up" to the clever features. The quality of the fit and finish varies from good to bad. Sharpeners for pencils are cheap and break down quickly. It's difficult to use the pivoting belt hook, which makes it even more difficult to just stuff into a pocket. The bottom finger brake is ineffective because it requires so much force. Attempting to disengage the top lock and place your finger on the bottom finger brake one-handed is a frustrating experience. In a small package, the tape provides a nice wide rigid tape. This Fastcap version's left-to-right layout makes it difficult to read (at least for those over 45). The small size of the numbers negates any advantage gained from having numbers pointing both directions. It's much easier for me to read a large number backwards than it is to read this tape. The fractions are very easy to read because they alternate between black and red.
