Questions & Answers

Is there anyone who owns both the V600 and this one and can compare the two? I'm familiar with the specifications and would like to hear about your personal experience. ?

The V850 is a significant improvement. The holders for film and slides are far superior. With the V600, we had trouble scanning textured photos, but not with the V850. Film and slide scans are now more accurate. We're glad we kept up with things.

What is the best way to use a fluid mount tray? Is it possible for the movie to become wet? Is it possible to use it without using any fluid? Please accept my sincere thanks. ?

I'd look up "Wet Scanning" on Google or YouTube to learn more. However, in response to your question, the film will become wet. You fill the tray with special fluid before inserting your negative. Wet scanning, at its most basic level, can help fill in scratches, reduce/eliminate light scattering and refraction, hold the image flat to the glass, and provide a variety of other benefits that can help improve the image quality for scanning. It adds a significant number of steps (and time) to your workflow. I wouldn't recommend wet scanning unless you're working on a unique project (books, for example) or planning to make large prints.

So you can load a slide tray and the software will cut them out and save each one as a separate file? Can you load multiple photos and the software will cut them out and save them as separate files?

Yes, you certainly can. The software (Silverlight) allows you to do batch scanning, which allows you to set up multiple scan areas and then hit batch to scan them all at once. The scan area for the tray must also be set (it is not automatic), but it works without the trays.

What is the difference between this and the Plustek for 35mm scans?

B and I are in agreement. This is something Menke is working on. While I do not own a Plustek, I do scan 35mm film with a primefilm xas (and before that, a primefilm xa). A dedicated 35mm film scanner of decent quality will produce better scans than a flatbed. The Epson V850, on the other hand, is more versatile, and I use it to print medium and large format film with it. If you don't shoot 35mm film exclusively and can't afford two scanners, the Epson is your best option.

Selected User Reviews For Epson Perfection V850 Pro scanner

D is for You'd expect this scanner to outperform a scanner that costs less than $200 in every way
3/5

However, there is one major flaw with this scanner that Epson has yet to address. For the prosumer who is archiving old photos, slides, and negatives, this makes the scanner a complete waste of money. The Major Problem: br>br>

- When scanning with the Epson v850, you have several options, including the "Dust Removal" option, which is one of the most important. "Scratches" is a filter that removes scratches. When this option is selected, the scanner and its software analyze the image to detect and remove small flecks of dust, scratches, or tears that may be present on the photo or negative. br>br>- When you use the Epson scanner with this feature turned on, the result is very disappointing. As a result, the image has MAJOR COLOR COMPRESSION throughout, resulting in a serious defect in the scanned image. It makes no difference what level of D you are on. The compression is always present regardless of which S you use. Compression is not available with any other feature; it is only available with the Dust feature. Filter for scratches.

- This is a dreadful side effect that ruins the scanned image completely. The fact that the D is such an important consideration is what makes it so important. Without the ability to use the built-in D filter, the S filter is probably the most important filter for scanning old photos, slides, and negatives. With the S filter, the scanner is effectively useless for everyone except professionals who have high-quality aftermarket software and are willing to spend the extra time cleaning up their scans.

- NOTE: It's very likely that the Epson D will be used. The S filter problem is a software issue that affects all Epson scanners that run the same software. We hope it's fixed, but we're not holding our breath because the software has been in use for years and has gone through multiple updates without resolving this major problem. Other Remarks: br>br>

- If you're a professional who won't be using the D The Epson excels in one area, dark area image quality and detail, thanks to the S filter. However, this is countered by the fact that, on average, Epson scanners produce less detail in their scans than Cannon scanners. There is no clear winner in this situation because it is a give-and-take situation. You can choose between Cannon scans with excellent detail throughout and softer Epson scans with more black area detail. br>br>On photos and negatives, we ran all of our tests at 600dpi optical resolution. We used a variety of scanner driver features to compare hundreds of scans of the same image. The Epson scans a softer image with a greater red bias and less yellow in general. Full image detail (as if looking at the image through a magnifying lens) and richer color are provided by Cannon scanners. br>br>If you're only scanning photos (not negatives or slides), the newer Cannon Lide400 scanner, which costs only $90, produces scans that are equal to or better than the Epson v850 pro at low resolutions (600 dpi or less). It can also scan faster thanks to its USB 3. 0 port. There is no interface available. Unless you plan on using the v850 for its advanced features (such as negative scanning), it's difficult to see why anyone would pay $1200 for it. The letter D The scanner's S filter issue renders it nearly useless for the average consumer, and it is unable to replace any other scanner on your workbench for professionals.

Be wary of sellers on the gray market! BecTec Global e
3/5

V. is a company that specializes in manufacturing and distributing g. (They should be outlawed by Amazon. ) I bought this scanner six months ago without realizing it was a gray market unit (no warranty in the United States - I'm unable to return it because it was not intended for sale in the United States, so I'll have to pay for the repairs myself. (The scans show vertical lines)br>The seller was BecTec Global, and I would not recommend purchasing from them because of this problem.

Only a nerd would enjoy this software! I purchased the scanner because I have thousands of slides dating back 50 years that I need to digitize
3/5

However, I was unable to register my device because the Epson website stated that my serial number was incorrect; I contacted Epson technical support, who informed me that they were unable to assist me and provided me with a phone number to call. When I dialed that number, I was directed to dial another number! The Silverfast software serial number had also expired (the scanner had been purchased brand new on 5/11/2020), so I couldn't use it unless I paid $150 to upgrade it. As a result, I decided to try the Epson software next. I was able to scan my slides into my Macbook Pro, but when I tried to access them, they were in an unreadable format! The scanner needed to be repackaged and returned to Amazon at that point!.

It's a lot of money for what it does. wms: 20180922; 20180922; 20180922; 20180922; 20180922; Because my previous scanner, a Pacific model, was so bad, I decided to buy this one. Two sets of film mounts are included with the Epson V850. The hardware is well-behaved and (so far) very dependable. br>br>The software is a complete waste of time. The scanner comes with SilverLight (a large pile of poorly laid out software) and Epson scan software, which goes to sleep if the mouse isn't moved. Moving the mouse every minute is completely unworkable for scans that can take up to 30 minutes. Both of these software packages have a lot of potential, but their flaws and poor user interface make them almost unusable. usable.

Great scans, but the v800 is a better option
4/5

To figure out how to use the film attachments, I had to read through the manual. But I'm pleased with the scan quality I'm getting from this product; however, I'm giving it four stars because the Silverfast software that comes with it is a complete failure; after an hour of playing with it, I still couldn't get a decent scan. Stick with Epson scanner software, which is far easier to use and produces better results. This model also includes color targets and scanner profiling software. Because you have to track down the proper download files to match the specific version of the targets shipped, profiling the scanner was more difficult than it needed to be. The provided download link does not take you to the actual download page. You'll have to look around the website until you find the appropriate page. I used the best available match because there was no exact match for the target version I received online. The difference between the custom scanner profile I created and the generic V850 profile provided by default was infinitesimally small after I spent a few hours profiling the scanner. To even notice a difference, it took a lot of staring at scan histograms. br>br>The moral of the story is that unless you require two sets of film trays, you can probably save $150 by purchasing the V800.
