Questions & Answers

What is the best way to use this unit with 6x7 negatives? Is it capable of holding one or two of these size negatives while remaining flat?

The holder has a single strip that can hold three 6x6s, but it can also hold two 6x7s. Probably two 6x9s if the frame spacing isn't too wide; in general, I prefer the V800's redesign of all film holders formats to the V700's (which I use). They can hold half as much (one medium format strip rather than two; one 4x5 instead of two), but they're noticeably sturdier, lock better, and come with a sheet of clear plastic to help keep the film flat. As a very good prosumer level film scanner, I recommend this unit and the holders.

Is it possible to scan four 4x6 photos at once so that they can be imported separately? I can only get three of them to work at the same time without merging photos. ?

No, the V800's bed isn't big enough to hold four 4" x 6" photos at once and still leave room for the software to crop them automatically. You can only put three on each of the eight slots. 5" x 11. Flatbeds with a diameter of 7 inches. The Epson Group

Is it possible to scan negatives directly on the glass without the use of a holder?

Because I didn't have any other choice, I used my glass 5x7 negs directly on the platen and got fantastic results. Because the holders have a variable standoff height and anti-reflective coating, I believe you'll be able to adjust the "focus" on the negs. As a result, there would be a benefit to using them. I suppose it depends on how critical you want to be about skipping the holders so you can scan more negs at once.

I'm having a hard time comprehending the information about the operating system: Will Windows 10 support this?

Yes, the scanner drivers are compatible with Windows 10. The Epson Scanner Team is a group of people dedicated to making scanners better.

At this point, there have been 1600 scans
5/5

So far, there have been no issues. Excellent outcomes. UPDATE: After a year and ten months and 3000 slides and photos, I'm still happy with this scanner. There are no problems. br>There is one minor point to mention. Four small height adjustments can be found in the corners of the slide holder. Those are there for that purpose because you can't focus this scanner. Adjusting those does, in fact, make a difference. br>It's not a lot, but it's a start. I didn't think it was making a difference, but after scanning the same photo on each of the height settings, I noticed that one was getting a slightly clearer image as I clicked through them.
so. I'd look into it for the best outcome. br>br>================================================================== br>I bought this to scan all of my family's old photos and slides. I first purchased the Canon 9000, but returned it after discovering a red fuzzy line that ran through all of the photos scanned on the scanner's left side. Because someone else had experienced the same issue, I decided to spend the extra money and get the Epson because I only want to do this project ONCE. Also, the Canon's interface software seemed a little clumsy. br>At this point in time. I'm about 1600 photos and slides into the project with the V800 (and there's still a lot more to go), and I'm really enjoying it so far. So far, there have been no issues. There is virtually no warm-up time, and there are numerous options for cleaning up photos as they are scanned. That's something I haven't done a lot with. Color and level adjustments are something I prefer to do on my own. The results, however, were perfectly acceptable when I let it do some of that automatically. br>Some people complain that the slide holder is flimsy, but I've put hundreds of slides in and out of it, and it's still going strong. I can see how the little "tines" that hold the slides in place could break off if you yanked them out too quickly and at too steep an angle. But I don't think "normal" use will break it. When I first started using the software, I only had one problem. The link to the online manual was not working for some reason. It's the last thing to load during the installation process. It was simply not going to work. So I simply told it to skip that step, and everything went smoothly from there. It takes about a minute per slide (at 4800 dpi, no "ICE" or clean up) and about the same for photos at 1200 dpi (no ICE, etc). br>For slides, you put 12 in the holder, and it does a quick preview scan, shows them all in a column, and then lets you go through each one individually to flip, rotate, or apply any of a number of processes. It appeared to be a useful tool. br>And there's one more thing. It only appears to want to store 999 scans in a single folder. Then I had to add a different "prefix" to the names so that the file would be saved in the same folder as the others without overwriting anything. I'm not sure if it DID write over something or if it simply didn't save the file because of the naming conflict. When it came back around after 999, however, something strange happened, and I had to change the naming prefix to keep going. I haven't even scratched the surface of this device's features. However, I am enjoying it so far (1600 photos and slides). It also appears to be true to the photo's colors.

You'll be fine if you read the scanner's operating manual, which is a quick read
5/5

In the fall of 2017, I purchased this. I scanned 2,600 Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides as well as 1,500 3x5 colored photos and 800 Kodachrome slide negative strips. The photo-editing software was not installed by me. It isn't required in any way. You'll be fine if you read the scanner's operating manual, which is a quick read. There are several sizes of film holders to accommodate various sizes of film negatives, as well as a slide holder. I used Corel Paintshop Pro to color correct all of my slides before scanning them because I've been using it for over 20 years and am familiar with it. You have the option of scanning at different resolutions. I used a resolution of 4,800 pixels per inch (ppi), which is close to that of film. The color reproduction astounded me. The colors were accurately reproduced by the scanner, and they were spot on. For very old and degraded photos, I like the scanner's "color restoration" option. It works well in both color and black and white, and while it won't make the photo look brand new, it'll be a lot better than the old one. I recently completed a portrait of my grandmother that is 105 years old. The photo had started to turn yellow. The color restoration feature brought out the contrast between the black and white images. The control panel is simple to use, and you won't have to dig through menus to find what you're looking for. You can see the scan before you buy it, which is a huge benefit for a variety of reasons. During the preview phase, you can also customize each slide's or photo's editing options. NOTE: The instructions on how to make global changes are insufficient. It took me a long time to realize that my "global" changes were not, in fact, global. This is the scanner to get if color accuracy and resolution detail are important to you. I'm a happy camper because I'm able to digitize all of my numerous trips. ONE NEGATIVE POINT - When scanning slides, the machine crops the image around the edges by about 1/8" to 3/16"; As a result, if there's anything vital in that border, you'll lose it. I didn't notice it for the most part until I did a scan of my dog's feet at the bottom of the slide, which revealed that he had lost a significant portion of his legs. Scanning slides that aren't in their paper holders causes no cropping issues, so you can always pull the slide out of its paper holder and scan the entire picture if you need to.

Finally, a solution to my archiving nightmares with 35mm, medium format, and 4x6 prints
5/5

I, like most people from the 1980s and 1990s, have a large box of 35mm negatives, 4x6 prints, and some medium format negatives that I'd like to archive. I attempted this ten years ago with an old Canon Scanner, but it was a slow process that never yielded results. But I'm really excited about how well this process will work with the V800. First and foremost, let's get the facts straight - Scanning at a high resolution takes a long time on the scanner. My 35mm negatives are cut into four-exposure strips, and scanning 12 of them at 4800dpi with the ICE scratch/dust removal enabled takes about 30 minutes. In just a few minutes, I can load three strips of negatives, prescan them, and begin a batch scan with the SilverFast software. This means I can start a scan, then go do something else before returning to batch up the next strips. It'll take a long time to scan all of my photos and negatives, but I'm very pleased with the quality of the scans I'm getting with Silverfast; I'm sure I could get away without the dust removal if I was more diligent and wiped down the negatives, but the results I'm getting are more than adequate for my needs.
