Traditional reeds are more difficult to work with than java reeds. A 3. A 4 java is the same as a 5 traditional. Make sure, though, that you buy your feed with your mouthpiece facing the right way. The reed strength required by various mouthpieces varies.

When I started playing again a few years ago, the saxophone I purchased came with some old Rico Royals. They were exactly as I remembered them, but I purchased a box of new ones, which were all disappointing. A saxophonist pal (who hadn't taken a 35-minute break in a long time) Their quality had deteriorated over the years, according to a year hiatus). So I picked up a Vandoren sample pack and gave it a shot. The Red Java reed appealed to me because of its deep color. I bought a box of them, but none of them lived up to the promise of the first reed. The Green Java sample reed was also a favorite of mine - a tad more laid-back than the Red - I tried a box of those as well. Each reed in the box sounded fantastic this time. And I've recently upgraded from version 2 to version 3. 5 to 3 and every reed in that box sounds even better, so I've discovered my new favorite reed.
When I first began learning about different sounds and how different setups affect your sound, I began experimenting with different reeds in order to fine-tune my sound. I'd recently purchased a custom mouthpiece and was pleased with it, but V16s were too dull and ZZs were too bright. This has put me right in the middle of both, which I adore. They have a depth and roundness to them that the ZZ's don't, and they're not as dark as a classical sound.
These reeds are fantastic; I switched from Rico Royal and am very pleased with my decision. They last a long time and produce a fantastic sound. I use them because I play in a jazz band and a saxophone ensemble in my community. In the future, I will purchase these as needed.
I've been playing tenor for 50 years and have never had such a positive experience with a reed! Despite rave reviews from a few people, I could kick myself for not trying these years ago.
My daughter's music teacher recommended that we get her these so she could play higher notes on her bass clarinet more easily. These were fantastic and greatly aided in the attainment of higher notes.
For tenor sax, this is an excellent product. I've purchased other Vandoren reeds and have been pleased with them. I don't play the saxophone (my instrument of choice is the piano), but my son and granddaughter do. Vandoren has been a great help to me.
They're a lot of fun to play on! It's incredible how much more vibrant and clear the tone is than when I normally play.
Only two of the reeds are useful, while the other three are ineffective.
