The depth of the groove is 3/16 in.
To do it, all you need to do is melt one end and attach it to the other end using a lighter or other heat source. You do have to practice a bit to make it nice and neat, but it's not difficult.

2 industrial sewing machines are available for use in the production of speciality items. Some of the time, I resell industrial sewing machines that I have refurbished. The belting is so much easier and quicker if you buy a roll of it, cut to length, melt the 2 ends with a lighter and hold it together for a few seconds. Once the bumps are trimmed off, you can put the strands together. I have never had an issue with this belt breaking. For antique sewing machines, I also make custom belts in a smaller size.
A small rock tumbler needed a round belt replaced. I used this to replace the round belt. Over two months have passed and it's still going on. As I was putting them together, I found it easier to use the flat surface of a vice rather than checking the fit of the sides and heated the utility blade with a torch. Whilst melting both sides at once, I placed the two ends on top of each other and connected them. Taking the lump together until it cooled made it easier to handle. By first cutting off the loose excess with a knife, I sanded it.
Do you remember when I made belts for junk that didn't need them? Is that true? Yes, you're right. Although I have not used belts for my bench grinders, I arranged three bench grinders back-to-back and made a belt to go from one powered up unit (AFTER it is set up) to the bench grinder behind. It took all of a few seconds for the first grinder to turn both grinders by simply wrapping a belt around each 1/2" shaft, fusing their ends together, and then running the machine. This surprised me!
I was amazed by your presentation! I was really pleased with the result. What happened to the belts? They did not break or get loose? After running it for 30 minutes, I didn't encounter a single issue. It would be nice for everything to work like that. I think this is fantastic. The item will be in my shop always from now on.
Finding a replacement is becoming more and more difficult. Buying this to give it a try worked! Thanks a lot! The belt does not stretch but jumps off under stress. Strong weld, but the belt does stretch.
The cloth will stretch, so make it 10 percent shorter than you need it. Welding it together with a vblock set is easy it's aligned exactly, and as soon as the ends are melted, a small piece of heated metal is inserted between them and put over the pieces until they are cooled. The system has worked well.
My high degree of skepticism was skyrocketing after I learned you cut it with a knife, melt the ends with a lighter, and you have a belt. These things work, though. Besides using the tool on my Chinese leather patching machine, which has a motor attached, I also use it for welding. It is doing really well and a lot of power is being transmitted.
The odd size 3/8" V bet I needed on my sewing machine that I couldn't find anywhere was needed because I built it from parts My tube is 10 mm in diameter. The material is wider than 3/8", however once it is on there, the material forms nicely and snugly against the surface. I have a heavy duty leather machine and it has so far performed well - it holds up well and does the job!.
It works well for its design and can be easily repaired with either a lighter or soldering iron, heated on both sides until both sides are melted together before adhering. This is what I use these for, so I will most definitely purchase again.
