In this picture, you can see that this downstem is only 3in long (from the joint). Furthermore, the quality of this glass isn't as good as it could be.
The stem broke when I tried to take it out after using it for only a week. We would have been out of a job if thicker had been a non-starter.
A poor seal, air bubbles, and signs of stress abound on this stem. The glass is barely joined together, the seal is inadequate, and the stem is very distressed. As long as there is no quality control, this is highly fragile and will break very easily.

We used it for only one week before it broke.
Since it was shipped in bubble wrap and shattered in pieces upon arrival, by the time it was opened, it was broken.
You can get some incredible results if you measure correctly.
