It would be helpful if you suggested A lamp with an on/off ball chain is a good candidate, if it already has such a mechanism.

Can you tell me how resistant this is to rust? Is it necessary for me to have one in humid weather outside?

I am not sure, but perhaps there is an anti-hippie element A rust spray that you can purchase will help you prevent rust.

This chain would be able to be cut into a single chain if it were to be 3' long. Can you tell me what the 5' sections are?

There are couplings, but they are small, like the one you see at the end of the chain in the photos, so you would need to attach it to something with a coupling or buy extra couplings for each section of chain.

We found this to be the perfect connection for our new ceiling fan since the chain that came with the fan is rather short (since our fan is located at a high ceiling).
