Questions & Answers

My previous Modi 3 only lasted a year and a half - Before the computer recognizes it, I must heat it up with a hair dryer. Has anyone else had this problem with this one?

Joint made with cold solder. Please return it.

I'm not sure how I'd hook up my iPod. I'm not sure what kind of cable I'll require. ?

This device is not intended to be used with an iPod.

Is it compatible with the Bose Pro8 or L1 Compact?

You can connect your source's digital output to the Modi and the Modi to any amplifier with RCA inputs as long as they both have RCA inputs.

Will I be able to use my desktop volume control if I use the schitt modi 3 with my desktop and connect powered speakers via optical out?

No, I do not believe that is true. I believe you'd have to use the speakers' volume control. If you use a USB connection, you can do so.

Don't put it off any longer - now is the time to take action
5/5

It's simple to purchase. Where do I begin? I was putting together a backup sound system for a recently opened room. I combined some vintage tube gear with Polk monitors and a velodrome sub to create this setup. Because my source material would be high bit rate/sample rate streaming, I knew I'd need an external DAC to get the most out of it - I began my search for DACs in the $500 to $1000 price range. I borrowed a friend's Schitt Modi 3, set it up, and ordered it after listening to music I was familiar with for half an hour. This DAC easily outperforms any other DAC I've heard, including those costing over $1,000. With their (and Amazon's) return policy, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Don't wait, don't look around, and just buy it. You're not going to be let down. You can buy those $500 snake oil optical cables with gold plated connectors with all the money you'll save because they help focus photons for tighter bass. This is the single most important upgrade you can make. I'm very happy.

Modi 3 is a significant upgrade over the previous version
4/5

Good day, everybody! br>br>I've owned and used the original Schiit Modi 3 for over a year, and while I enjoyed it - Whether used as a standalone DAC or in conjunction with a headphone amplifier - I was still on the lookout for more information. Later, I discovered that the iFi ZenDAC was superior in terms of sound quality. staging, depth, and reproduction at a higher frequency Nonetheless, Schitt products have always been a favorite of mine. So I ordered the new Modi 3 over the last month and have found it to be an improvement - even if it is a minor one. I use the term "improvement" to suggest that I was solely concerned with the overall sound. Schitt DAC products, as usual, blend in nicely with your PC (mine is obviously Windows 10) and don't require any special drivers. The Modi 3 was instantly recognized, and according to what I've heard, Schitt has made it simple to connect via USB in the plus model with new technology. br>br>At this point, you can add sound. The mids and highs were clearly defined, which was the first thing I noticed. They started out sounding a little harsh and dry, but they grew on me. This was immediately noticeable, especially when playing classical music, where instruments like upper-register strings, cymbals, and a few others sounded grating. Of course, we're discussing "preliminary" findings. With the passage of time, and as the unit deteriorated, The sound only changed slightly as it warmed up - The highs, on the other hand, may be a little dry and a little rough compared to other models. Now, keep in mind that I always have my audio gear on, which makes a huge difference in the sound and causes the overall balance to warm up over time. The most significant advancement over the previous Modi 3 is (in my opinion - Keep in mind the following: 1. br>br> Adding a little more substance - That is, there is excellent separation of instruments from back to front, as well as an excellent sound stage. 2. br>br>1. br>br>br>br>br>br The ability to play bass in a very dynamic way. 3. br>br>4. br>br>5. br>br>6. The midpoints and highpoints are more distinct - with a much improved ability to distinguish instruments (especially in large orchestral scenarios like those found in classical music, big band arrangements, and so on). However, despite the music appearing to have more depth, I found the highs to be a little drier in general. br>br>Of course, if all you want to do is use the DAC on its own, you can do so. If you want to pair the Schitt Modi 3 with an absolutely fantastic budget Head/Amp and Preamp design, however, you have a plethora of options. There are a lot of options. br>br>The small size (and, of course, the sound) are what make this simple platform so appealing. Now, keep in mind that this $99 DAC (it's $119 on Amazon, but that's because it includes the $20 shipping charge as well) will never sound as good as the much more expensive higher-end models. It's not quite as good as high-end Schitt products, but it gets the job done. br>br>In keeping with my philosophy of judging a unit by its price before evaluating its performance, I give the Schitt Modi 3 a solid 4 stars.

For the past 40 years, I've been waiting for an external DAC; I've finally gotten the one I'd been hoping for
5/5

Without this product, I'd have a stack of CDs and DVDs that I'd accumulated over 40 years, the majority of which I couldn't listen to. br>About this product: I haven't had a chance to listen to everything in my collection yet, but the first CD I tried was fantastic. Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps' 'Bonafide' is a song written by Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps. I'm going to have to do a lot of listening. There are a plethora of excellent digital audio converters on the market; This one is one of my favorites because of the price-to-performance ratio. I love everything about it: the packaging, the shipping, the specifications, the performance, and the design. I had no idea a CD could be so enjoyable to listen to! It produces a great soundstage with none of the digital artifacts I was used to, so listening fatigue may be a thing of the past. Very low noise floor, great dynamic range, clarity, and lack of phase distortion that I was used to with anti-aliasing. The CD player uses aliasing filtering.

This is a huge improvement over the standard PC audio output
5/5

This was purchased to improve the audio output on my gaming PC's motherboard. I've never used an onboard PC audio output with such a low noise floor and fidelity. I'm streaming FLAC files from my PC into a $1200 hifi stereo setup, and the acoustic fidelity and richness rivals that of my fancy turntable setup. This will greatly improve the fidelity of your PC when connected to a decent stereo system. It's a must-have for any budget-conscious audiophile; while I still prefer vinyl for critical listening, upgrading to this DAC has opened my ears to the benefits of high-resolution digital music. This Schiit sounds AMAZING!.

Very let down
3/5

The sound quality isn't up to par with its ratings or that of similar products in this price range. I purchased this for my new PC because I was unable to use my Xonar Essence (internal card) with it. I decided to give it a try because it has good reviews and is reasonably priced. It didn't sound right to me on my desktop PC. As a result, I applied it to my actual system- B and Audio Research Ws, and the two were compared. Everything about The Essence is superior. The sound from this DAC is compressed, with a little too much bass, and a terrible top end and soundstage. It's probably better than a cheap sound card built into the computer, but that's about it. The only advantage is that it is extremely quiet when used with a computer, which is not true of all DACs and soundcards. I'm not sure how long I'll be able to use this product; I'd only recommend it to a very inexperienced audiophile or someone who can't afford to spend another $1. Even then, I'd advise you to make do with what you've got. Given the device's online reviews, I was surprised, but the box itself is well-made and attractive. It's a pity it doesn't sound more appealing.
