The right thing to do is- There is a NPT on each hand. The left-right split is something I haven't seen before The thread on a pipe is left handed.

However, the threads for the hot water heater were damaged and the Anode Rod needed to be replaced. This tool was used to define the current thread pattern so that a new rod can be threaded and tightened My water heater was still in good working order, and I did not have to replace it! It took me one hour to figure out how to properly use it by consulting a YouTube video on how to do it. I didn't rush. It was very satisfying to find no leaks after cleaning out the tank and checking for leaks! The device did exactly what it had to do! The cost was half of what it would have been if it had been sold by the company locally! This is something I would highly recommend!.
