The tape should be placed at seams (or along the edge where two materials meet), as specified in the description. In terms of how much to use, I would put it all along the edges in your case so that no wind gets under a gap and prys up on the panel. You'll probably want a continuous bond all the way around the perimeter.
Check out AM Solar's website, where they've been using 3M VHB to mount solar panels on RV roofs for years with no problems.
hell yea.

Each roll used to come in a sealed plastic clam shell package with non-recyclable packaging. Stick liners were used to easily seal any partial rolls without allowing them to dry out. br>br>However, the last two orders came in thin heat-sealed plastic bags that stuck to the sides of the rolls and had to be destroyed just to get the rolls out. However, you wouldn't want to put the half-rolls in them in the first place. br>br>It appears that the previous rolls we bought were linked by Amazon to another reseller who buys in bulk and then bags the rolls in cheap plastic bags. The old photos showed the rolls in their single-roll clam shells from the manufacturer, but all of the images have been replaced, including those on our HISTORY orders! Amazon is terrible and dishonest! br>br>These rolls are pricey, and once they lose their tacky quality, they're useless. I'll have to start looking for items elsewhere. With their business practices, Amazon is losing a growing portion of our business.
For the past two decades, I've used 3M VHB. It appeals to me. However, the most difficult roll I've ever separated was the one I received in March. I'm not sure if it had been sitting in the warehouse for a long time or what, but once the red back was applied, it took an eternity to remove. Then, once I was able to disassemble it, it became so stuck to the tape that it would pull the tape away from whatever it was attached to. Just thought you might be interested. It's possible that you've had a bad day.
I've been using this tape for years and it's always been extremely sticky. My most recent order was ineffective; the liner was nearly impossible to peel off, and once it did, it was not sticky at all. I had no choice but to discard it. I'm guessing this vendor is repackaging an older product; my advice is to give it a try right away and return it if it's not usable.
VHB tape has a lot of holding power. The bond will not pop off unexpectedly if the surfaces are cleaned as directed. It's what I use to attach electronic components to G10 laminate (speed controllers, flight control boards, and RC receivers). It isn't cheap, but when compared to the equivalent in a hardware store, it isn't bad. It's similar to the first hot glue gun you ever used - you recall - I'm out and about looking for things to fix. The majority of 3M's products are fantastic.
VHB adheres well to a wide range of surfaces, but it is not a permanent bond and can be removed if necessary. To achieve complete adhesion, the surfaces must first be prepared. br>br>In response to a comment, here's how I prepare the surfaces: "After cleaning the surface with alcohol or water, I dry it thoroughly with a lint-free cloth. " cloth is provided for free. I clean rough surfaces after preparing them with a wire brush (brick/concrete) or sandpaper (wood, plastic). To avoid dirtying the glue, take care when removing the backing. When applying the tape, I apply even pressure for about 30 seconds all over the tape area to ensure good contact. Only one surface comes to mind- bedliner- This necessitated additional effort, which included the use of 3M adhesion promoter following preparation.
It says to give it 272 hours to dry 100%, so I placed the tape on my solar panel mount, set it down where I wanted it, tried to move it over about a% I decided it was good enough after about 48 hours and went on a camping trip. I drove slowly to my camp site, never exceeding 65 miles per hour, and when I arrived, I double-checked the panels, which were rock solid. Each panel has four brackets with an area of about 8 square inches each, so each panel is held in place with 32 square inches of this tape. Each panel also weighs about 18 pounds, but because it is lifted off the roof by brackets, the wind can get underneath and push up on it. I have no idea what kind of weight is being pushed or pulled around on this tape, but I can say with 100% confidence that it isn going anywhere! I still have a lot of this tape, and I'm trying to come up with new ideas for how to use it. I'm going to tape a paddle mount and a gopro mount to my kayak, and I'm not sure what else I'll do with it, but it's too cool/amazing to pass up. Because it's just tape, I was skeptical at first, but boy, was I mistaken.
I wish I'd been able to track down the manufacturer's original tape adhesive!.
It was difficult to locate genuine 3M VHS tape. There are a lot of different fakes out there, especially since there are so many. This was a genuine find.
