Because gas logs, unlike real logs, produce little or no smoke, the clip is designed to keep the flue from being accidentally closed. When I light a gas fire, I open my flue; the device is only there to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning if the flue appears to be open when it isn't.

This is a quick fix. To keep the damper in the flue open, hickey clamps to it (looking up from the fireplace). When the damper is closed, it adds enough weight for it to move down. This was easy to set up and functioned as expected. It's that simple.
It took only a few minutes to set up; Everything is in order. Good buy.
Keeps the flap open, preventing any residual odor from the pilot from entering the house, and aids in the event that we forget to open the flap when turning on the fireplace.
