I believe it's made of very heavy cardboard. With the cake, I'm very happy with the quality and appearance!

The paint peels away. I gave these cake drums a three-star rating because, while I like the way these 8-inch cakes look, the cake drum itself is of poor quality. I usually only use one cake drum (one that is larger than my cakes), then I work on my cake while cleaning the cake drum of any crumbs or frostings. However, I have to be extra cautious with these because I tried to clean the excess frosting (white crumb coat) off the cake drum with a napkin, but my napkin was covered in gold paint. That's when I realized the paint was peeling away from the cake drum. br>br>I would recommend working on the cake with a thin/simple cake drum the same size as your cake and then layering it (taping it) on top of this "fancy" cake drum.
Carrying a six-layer cake is difficult enough without having to worry about the board beneath it. These bulletin boards are fantastic! They're sturdy, don't scratch when you cut on them, and they're lovely to look at. I usually clean them with a soapy paper towel and then re-use them. I'm going to use them for my family's cakes.

For the money, this is a fantastic purchase. Tall, heavy cakes are something I bake and sell. These are weight-bearing and have an elegant, professional appearance. It appears to be very well-kept. Something similar is available for $5 per piece at my local bakery supply store. This is a much better deal, and I'll have plenty left over for the next cake.
