I really enjoyed seeing all the inner workings, wheels, escapements, etc. of the clock, as it makes it difficult to see its hands from afar. If you are an engineer, you should definitely check it out - The type of person you are.
There is however one gear near the base which pulses at a rate of one second where it is too slow to notice. In addition to the second hand, two pulsed gears are shown on the dial.
There is no latch or anything to hold the battery cover in place. It might require a bit of wriggling to work it out, but it should take care of itself.

My husband graduated from college on this day, so I got him this clock. Sadly, it had an internal odd smudge on the inside. Was it like a black fingerprint inside? My knowledge of the matter is limited. The seller and I were able to exchange the item after I contacted them. The new one is fine with my husband and me, but this one has like, hair or something on the hands that got stuck to the paint. I hate it when people stare at clocks close up, but that happens a lot. However, this one is so cool looking, that you can't help but take a shot at it. It was too much trouble dealing with shipping and all that again just to get another weird one. We decided to keep it instead of having to go through it all again. The clock is really great looking.
In its decorative role on the mantel, it is really lovely, but it is a useless clock since it is hard to read the time unless you are close enough to it in order to understand the numbers. This clock has a different set of hands than the picture shows. There might have been a better reading experience if they had been thicker and chrome. The clock itself is beautiful, and it works fine, but when I place it on a shelf that isn't moving, the hinges are so loose that it doesn't stay in a horizontal position. Due to the lilting, I assume it should stay at whatever angle you place it. Since the picture shows it upright, I expect it should remain at whatever angle it is set at. The item is not what I expected, so I am returning it and buying something else.
