Did not smell when it arrived However, the pillows have a thin feeling to them. This was a wispy cotton pillow, which I didn't like. For the price, I would have liked a firmer pillow. The black casing looks nice though, and it matches perfectly with my black seats on my interior vehicle. The straps could have been adjusted so that they'd be more comfortable. The pillow might not sit where you need it to depending on the shape of your car seat. Over time, I am concerned that the strap will wear out and become useless.
Although these pillows are cute, I only received one and it looks like it's worn out. Although I have to return them since my item arrived all jumbled I am pretty happy with how they fit.
