It has a paint layer at the bottom to protect the wood at the same time. Besides laying the brush flat to dry, we recommend patting the brush dry from excess moisture to make it last longer. Having used the pack less than 2 weeks, this is the second one I have had to trash from the pack. We were sure to shake off excess water, dab dry, and place over a container so it could air dry. However, mold is still The only thing I see happening with this method is mold growth after about a month or so. In my experience, mold still appears within a week even though I dried them off according to instructions in the manual. It took some time to return them before we were able to. I won't be purchasing this brand in the future. I find that disappointing because they are so cute and just the right size for my 5 year mold can pose a serious health hazard.
