The answer is that stannous fluoride (the fluoride salt of Tin, SnFl2) is the active ingredient that kills plaque bacteria, including those at the gumline. When Crest Fluoride toothpaste was first introduced in the 1960s, it contained stannous fluoride (the fluoride salt of Tin, SnFl2), which both strengthens tooth enamel and has an antibacterial effect on plaque bacteria. After a few years, anti-cavity toothpastes switched to sodium monofluorophosphate or sodium fluoride as the active ingredient, because stannous fluoride could cause brown stains on teeth, particularly in the spaces between teeth where food particles could lodge if people didn't floss before brushing (which many people don't). However, the SLS clogged my salivary ducts, resulting in a cyst that required surgery to remove. I'm no longer willing to use toothpaste that contains SLS. It's also unnecessary!.
My gums appear to be in better shape and are less sensitive. However, despite the fact that it claims to be stain-free, this toothpaste does leave brown stains between teeth. After a month of use, I noticed that my dentist was spending more time trying to remove the stains between my teeth. To reduce the amount of staining, I've started switching between toothpastes.
