There are two metal shanks (one on each side of the calf) with a two-inch indentation that you could snap off, but you'd be left with a sharp metal edge. This is something I would never do. If this boot is too tall, it may be preferable to get the shorter version. The basic design is to encase the entire calf in order to relieve pressure on the foot and ankle, and going any shorter would compromise this (according to my orthopedist).
The height of the tall boots is 19". The length of the short boot is 12". One who is tall will not be reduced to a smaller size.

This is the same boot I got from the doctor's office, but it's a lot less expensive! When I had foot surgery, the first boot was worn out, and I needed to get a new one. I bought this one because I knew the insurance company would not pay this time. This one has a slightly faster air pump, as well as instructions for adjusting the boot sleeve position.
This boot is sturdy and appears to be well-made. With free two-day shipping, my order arrived the next day. Even though I was against it, wearing a boot for this type of injury changed my life. My only criticism is that the toe area of the removable fabric "sock" portion of the boot is too short. This seam/ridge sits between your toes, making your shoe feel like it has a rock in it. It appears to me that there is a design flaw. I've attached a photo, but you can see the same thing if you look closely at their product photo. I'm going to return the boot because it's so inconvenient. My neighbor has a boot that I borrowed for a day until my own arrived, and hers is not affected by this problem. Note: I'm a size 10 women's fitness shoe, and I ordered the medium boot (based on the size chart provided). Check out the images. Kathy.
This boot was PERFECTLY FITTING for my wife's leg! It cost less than what a MD’s office would charge you! Within two days, I received it! THIS IS A COMPANY THAT I WOULD ORDER FROM ANY DAY! Any of my friends would be interested in working with this company!.
This product is exactly as described; however, with all of the straps, it's a pain to put on and take off; they stick to each other and take time.
The boot has made me happy.
