In a water test, I applied two coats each of Scotchgard and Fabric Defense to two couches. The couches in both examples absorbed water readily without any of these products. The water was completely repelled from both couches when either protectant was applied. It's immediately stinky and makes you feel lightheaded when you first apply either protectant I could not detect any trace of odor on the couches a few days later, even with close up sniff tests. The same results were obtained from repeating the water test a few days later. The difference between the two is that Scotchgard changes the feel of the fabric quite a bit, but Fabric Defense barely made a difference. It became very coarse and rough after being treated with Scotchgard. Although I get the feeling Scotchgard would work better longer, its changing couch texture coupled with the low price of Fabric Defense makes it my clear pick for the best protection.
