Because of the disgusting smell of the heating pad, we rated it as 4 stars. Three times now, I've washed the item and there is still a chlorine smell. The heating pad can be useful for a lot of reasons, however when using it on my neck, I get nauseous as the smell damages my olfactory senses. It makes me wonder what was used to sanitize it before it made its way The item was made in China, so I'm not sure what chemicals might have been used during manufacture. If I ever manage to remove the smell, I'll update this post. In this case, I will have to return the item due to how awful it smells and how it makes everything smell that touches it. I have disposed of the heating pad due to the smell. I suspect the bad smell is being caused by what ever is inside the heating component. The pad was washed several times and I used odor eliminating products, but it did not work. If you washed it first, the smell would go away, but after it was heated, it would return. I had a headache and nausea whenever I tried to use it, as its smell is absolutely terrible.

The scarf also drapes far enough down my back (I'm 5'11" and fairly slim) that I also get benefit from it for my shoulder blades. This is why I gave it four stars instead of five As I've said, the part that goes up your neck does not wrap around your neck to get the sides, and the bit in the front does not clasp as securely as I'd like. There is a magnet in the two sides that holds them together and keeps them attached. I like the design of this. In order to make it ideal, there would need to be a way of holding it together much more snugly around my neck, so the sides would be covered. In the front, I tried to clip it together with a clothespin so the two front pieces cross each other, but the edge of the pad is too thick for the clothespin to fit. A binder clip works the same way. It can't get around the padding on the edge because it is too thick. If I keep looking around at home, I might be able to find something that can hold it together a bit better so I can feel the warmth of the pad on both sides of my neck. I'm satisfied with how it performs overall, and I plan to use it for a long time. Although it is more expensive than a bunch of other heat pads on Amazon, it works better in terms of heating (even better than the highest-rated pads).
