In short, yes. The HDMI ports of a few Shaw Direct receivers have been blown out. In my experience, the ones I have seen are connected to surround sound systems via HDMI ports. This could be because the surround sound system was putting out a lot of contact Shaw Direct, they will usually cover the receiver under warranty, since they offer lifetime coverage. Replacement parts are usually refurbished and shipped to you.

The Peel Remote app for Android devices works well on our raspberry pie devices. I do not have any information about the Raspberry Pi devices. I believe you might be able to get in touch with the developer of that app who may be able to offer you what you need, or let you know who else might be able to help.
