I had the same issue with my laptop computer, believe it or not! It's similar to opening a laptop when it comes to opening this DVD player. When you have the player flat and unopened in front of you, the most important thing is to have the name (BioFun) on the cover positioned right to left, rather than easily read from left to right. It appears as if you'll need to read it backwards. (It's almost as if the name is an "advertisement" that someone directly across from you can read the product brand name from left to right when the top is open.) ) If you want to be sure you'll be able to open it, do so while it's still closed. A closure will be placed in the center of the side edge. If you want to swivel the screen, you can do so with that closure once the top is open. Start by placing your thumbs at the corners closest to you and lifting the top with your thumbs (I found this to be the easiest). Because the only "clasp" is on the opposite/far edge, where the [only] closure that secures the top to the bottom of the player, there should be no resistance. The top can be swiveled for easier viewing thanks to the same closure. I know this explanation is a little 'wordy,' but it's a really nice player once you get it open. This is possible for you! I didn't think the volume was low; in fact, I thought it was louder than most, and I used my tribit with it, which plugs in and adds volume as needed.
