Channels are all I see on this radio, no charts. It is used to identify where you are in distress so that coast guards can find you.
recently used the HX890 on a sailing boat in the Caribbean which uses solar power for electricity. A total of 12 were produced. I was able to get this working at 4 volts.

Water was visible inside the display of my HX 890 after rinsing off salt air residue from the screen. The seal around the LCD screen failed due to the exposure to salt air. It was replaced with a new radio, which I then thoroughly tested under a sink. In addition to the first HX 890 failure, a small amount of water intruded into the second. A handheld VHF is a key piece of vessel safety equipment, according to me. It is critically important that a handheld VHF radio has the submersion feature when you are in an overboard situation. As your vessel may abandon you, it will be difficult to have a working radio. am not sure whether the HX 890 seal problems are simply a result of a bad batch of Amazon hardware, or if there is something more serious going on. It seems much more demanding for this radio to go overboard while being worn around your waist and exposed to the high pressure water than what I did and it certainly did not meet the IPX-required lifestyle. The screen cover of the LCD screen in this model seems thin compared to the previous model's that failed.
As the owner of the previous model HX870, I noticed this new model has thinner plastic screen covers. By potentially making it easier to bend, there is a likelihood of The seal is intact during everyday use, packing and bumping. I am speculating but am doing so with some knowledge!.
The unit does not seem to have a water tight seal, but for the features this unit has, it is hard to beat. It is easy to program - Using an LCD monitor and a PC, I put in 40 MMSI#s for our fleet on this device are better than those on the SX870, making it the easiest full-screen computer The function VHF to use is - There is even an option to scramble the message. No other feature that I would want on a VHF would make sense to me.
I normally keep it strapped to my vest when I'm kayak fishing. Unfortunately, I have not needed to use the DSC features. Even so, it has certainly brought me a sense of security to know I can use that DSC distress button to transmit my position to the coast guard and other boats if an emergency arises.
I bought this for use on intercostal waterways for safety reasons, so I probably won't be able to use it for navigation. However, I am very pleased with the battery life and reception range so far. The ease of use grade was okay because it would take a while to get used to all of the.
There are lots of cool features on this radio, and it appears to be very sturdy as well. When you are on a boat, it is easy to hold and use.
The delivery and quality were both excellent.
The handheld is awesome and I am in love with it. The customer has not complained. My wallet is not lost or stolen, so I would buy another one if it were.
