Questions & Answers
There are different default hailing and emergency frequencies, as well as different frequency assignments to channel numbers. With a conversion table handy, you could use either radio, but using the appropriate local configuration is far easier.
Flat water for 5 miles in a straight line. Interference from the land/island is much less. The range is significantly increased with a higher external antenna. For the price, this is a good radio with a lot of features.
The menus and screens are a little difficult to learn, but the time invested is well worth it, and navigation and waypoints are simple to set up. Deleteing waypoints is a bit of a pain. The battery life is excellent, lasting more than 24 hours with light use. This is an excellent backup option. This product comes highly recommended by me.
It is not possible to charge via USB. In addition, as with other Standard Horizion radios I've seen, charging requires the entire charging CRADLE. not practical for on-the-go light travel:
Selected User Reviews For Standard Horizon HX890 Handheld VHF Navy Blue - Floating 6 Watt Class H DSC Two Way Radio
For several years, I've been using an older model Standard Horizon handheld with no issues. I decided to upgrade to DSC capability, and this appeared to be the most cost-effective option with the features I desired. Internal gps navigation, DSC calling, waterproofing, and floating. Because I read in one of the reviews that this unit didn't actually float, I double-checked that right after assembly. It not only floats, but it also activates the water-activated strobe light feature without the need to turn on the unit. Excellent feature and pleasant surprise. br>br>If you've ever used a marine radio, you'll know that they typically have far more features than most people will ever use, as well as pages and pages of instructions that most people will never remember. This isn't any different. br>br>Got an MMSI number for DSC use on US waters through Boat US. br>br>Just take your time getting acquainted with the features and settings you're interested in one at a time. br>br> It took me about 15 minutes to complete, and it couldn't have been any easier. Other boating websites, it appears, provide the same service.
I rarely write product reviews, but I feel compelled to warn others about what they can expect if they buy a Standard Horizon. br>br>About a month after receiving the product, it developed a problem in which the screen would light up but the buttons would be unresponsive, and nothing would appear on the screen. I was given the names of two distributors who would be able to provide support after an initial relatively quick response through the customer support email; after several rounds of email with both of them, one told me they couldn't help and to return to Standard Horizon; after several rounds of email with both of them, one told me they couldn't help and to return to Standard Horizon; after several rounds of email with both of them, one told me they couldn't help and to return to Standard Horizon; after several rounds of email with both of them The other advised me to look through the manual - which was ineffective because the issue was clearly one of hardware,- and ceased to respond. Given the lack of actual assistance, I emailed Standard Horizon's customer service address once more. This happened about a month ago, and there have been several follow-ups since then. Unanswered emails are piling up. My problem has not been solved, and I doubt it will ever be, despite the fact that I was able to use the product in less time than it took me to ask, follow up, or be ignored by customer support. This is clearly not good enough for a $200 product. br>Frustrated, I purchased a Uniden HDS75, which is a fantastic phone. I'm not sure how good their product support will be, but I can always buy another one if I need one, and the two of them will be less expensive than the HX890. If you're reading this, Standard Horizon, my summary is as follows: Great product, but customer service isn't up to par for such a high-priced item. I will not purchase from you again.
I recently joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary of the United States of America. This is an excellent radio station.
MOISTURE. ugh. In December of 2020, I bought this radio. I've been storing it in a waterproof boat bag since then. I realized today, five months later, that I should probably make sure the radio is charged before heading out on the water. The radio would turn on and display a normal start-up screen before failing. On the LCD, there are only black blobs. There was also a lot of moisture behind the screen. Furthermore, the rubber antenna has degraded and separated from the internal antenna lead. This is a waterproof marine radio, according to the manufacturer. It hasn't been mistreated or abused in any way. In fact, it's been in a water-resistant boat bag for the past five months, just in case. I was extremely disappointed. Next week, I'll attempt to take advantage of their three-year warranty.
When my boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's boyfriend's br>He was ecstatic that I had purchased the same radio for him.

Works.
It has a lot of features that I thought I'd use but don't; however, the audio quality is excellent and loud. The channels and names can be customized if you download the software. The antenna is the only thing I'm unsure about. The top two-thirds of it feels like rubber, as if there's nothing inside, and the radio, even in FM radio mode, doesn't seem very sensitive.
When you transmit, it will transmit your coordinates, which is a great radio for boating safety. However, you must register online with USBoat or others to obtain an "MMSI" that will identify this radio, YOU, and your boat information for YOU when you transmit or use the one touch emergency button, and if needed for use in an emergency, this radio has all of the necessary features, including floatation and lighting. I hope you never need it, but if you do, it could be worth a lot of money. This is a low-cost insurance policy.
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the radio. It has a plethora of functions. It's simple to get started with. The sound quality of the speakers is excellent. The GPS DSC option is one of my favorites. There are a few videos on the internet that will teach you more about the HX890. It's well-made and comfortable to hold, but it's missing a charging port. I like that it includes a 12v boat adapter, but the charging cradle is still required. I'll have to order a replacement and keep it on board. Overall, I think it's a great radio that will last for a long time.
