During Hurricane Irma, I used this feature, but there was very little "charging." While charging the phone and broadcasting, the radio struggled to maintain power. My recommendation to anyone looking for a phone charging option in the event of a power outage is to purchase a backup power cell with a USB port to plug your phone into. It's a lot more reliable than cranking up the radio. The rest of the radio's features, on the other hand, are excellent.
Yes, the radio can be charged using the USB cable that comes with it.
Please keep in mind that the charging light remaining red is a symbol for the radio being fully charged, so it will not turn green. If, on the other hand, the charging light flashes red, the item is still charging. I hope this has been of assistance.
Fully charging the radio via USB takes about 4 hours.

My sister lives in Puerto Rico, so I bought it for her. She is without power as a result of Hurricane Maria. It appeals to her. She can not only listen to the news and turn on the light at night, but she can also charge her phone and plug in a small USB fan. This, she claims, is the best gift she has ever received.
However, it was only used once! This little radio is incredible; we used it when our power was out during Hurricane Irma. We charged it before the hurricane and it stayed charged for two days without needing to be re-charged. The volume is extremely loud, and the light is extremely bright. I'm amazed at how powerful such a small device can be. I REALLY LIKE ITbr>br>***UPDATE JULY 2020- I only used the radio once before putting it away. It stopped charging after that. Intermittently, the radio will turn on and off. The model appears to have been updated recently. Esky was contacted, and I was waiting to see if the company offered good customer service.
This device came in handy when the power went out. Although it comes with a solar charger and a crank, I recommend using the USB cable that comes with it to charge it. The Solar Charger is functional; however, it does take some time to charge. The crank is also functional, though it requires some effort. This did charge my phone for a short time, but not for very long. Good for a short call, but not for a long call.
In Houston, we just got through Hurricane Harvey. During the worst of the storm, we were without power for days, and this was our only way of staying up to date on weather and tornado warnings. It took very little effort to get started, was simple to use, and was dependable. In a hurricane or emergency kit, this is an absolute must-have. I'm so glad we had this opportunity.
br>The flashlight isn't great, but it'll suffice if you're in the dark; no batteries or other accessories are required. PERFECT ALL IN ONE for your car, home, edc bag, and more.
The replacement that I received is excellent. Weatherband reception is good, sound quality is good, the hand crank works, and the phone charger works as well. I can't say for sure how long it will last, but I'm hoping it will! In the event of a weather emergency or a power outage, I'm glad I have this handy device.
A very handy little jack of all trades in an emergency. A powerful hurricane came dangerously close to hitting Hawaii recently, and while it didn't affect the majority of the islands, it was still a major threat. These types of events prompt you to check your disaster preparedness kits, and this was the one item we didn't have and couldn't get before the storm. br>br> A radio is essential to have on hand, and I liked that this one had several power sources, including a hand crank, a small solar panel, and a rechargeable 1000mAh battery. It also comes with a good light and a USB port on the back for charging your devices. br>br>For a cheap plastic device, the device seems to be quite durable. I believe it will last with proper care, but it is not designed to be thrown around. For the price, I believe the build quality is adequate. br>br>The radio performs as expected. It's simple to tune in to the stations, and the telescoping antenna does a great job of picking up signals. The speaker is basic and unremarkable, but it fulfills its purpose admirably. br>br>I believe one issue with these types of handcrank radios is that the batteries lose capacity and become nearly useless outside of hand cranking it the entire time you're using it because they're not used very often between potential disasters. I imagine this could be an issue with this radio, so it's probably best to store it with about a half-charge and check and recharge as needed to keep the battery in good shape. br>br>Overall, I think it's a great and important tool to have, and hopefully I'll never have to put it to the test, but I believe it's a good value for the money, and I can recommend it.
The tuning knob on mine is difficult to turn, but if you persevere, it will work. So far as I can tell, everything else is in working order. To keep everything in it moving, I'll turn it on and use it at least once a month for a few minutes. (I'm not sure if that helps or not) I also found it useful when walking the dog late at night with the flashlight and music because it's less expensive than using a phone if it falls.
