In the SHP9500s, the high frequencies of the sound were a bit grainy and on 9600s they tuned out the high frequencies. As the SHP9500s lacked bass, they boosted the bass so hard that it bled into the mids, then they tuned down the mids to offset that (US & UK? )

Build quality, materials, and clamps are all pretty similar. I got used to them equally in practice, even though they are slightly different. My only real concern was that the 9600s were a little rougher, but not to a significant degree. a bit ambivalent about the 9500s, but there are few decent options for open backs for under $100, so they're still one of the best choices. I don't even think the 9600s are comparable to the 9500s, even if they were the same price.
