Questions & Answers

Is it possible to use three of these in a hyperconverged solution in a production setting?

Yes, we have three Hyperconverged servers, but you can boost performance by adding a 10G network card.

Is it possible to use SSD drives on this server?

Yes, I was able to use the Western Digital blue ssd and Samsung evo at the same time.

In this box, I'd like to put 10TB hard drives. Is the raid controller capable of handling such large hard drives?

Hello, the controller in this unit is a H710p, which has 6GB of RAM and can handle drives larger than 2TB (yes, 10TB drives are supported).

PowerEdge Servers are high-quality machines
4/5

Just be wary of whom you choose as a seller. To begin, I'd like to point out that PowerEdge servers are of very high quality. very trustworthy I give the product a satisfied 4 star rating; the only reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating is because the base specs aren't ideal, but upgrading is relatively inexpensive. Unfortunately, the good news stops there; in this case, I received an inferior product with more than 20GB less ram than advertised (yes, I reseated all of the ram to ensure it wasn't a dislodged module, etc. ) and 3TB less hard drive storage than advertised. Finally, I understand that these are USED/REFURBISHED servers, which means that normal wear and tear is to be expected. Unfortunately, the server I received did not meet that criteria. It was in pretty bad shape, with a lot of scratches, almost more appropriately called gouges because some of the scratches were quite deep, leading me to believe these weren't caused by simply moving the machinery around, but rather something more serious. TechMikeNY was the seller who I ended up buying from. Just be wary, because after submitting an inquiry, I received nothing more than a standard runaround response that may be adequate for someone with no IT experience, but I have just shy of two decades in the industry, so the response I received was woefully inadequate, but not unexpected. I'm not going to buy tech gear from third-party sellers any longer because I've been burned far too many times. Best of luck if you get something that matches the description. You will not be disappointed with the quality of the PowerEdge server line if you choose a well-maintained server. Thank you for your time and consideration.

The server refuses to start up
3/5

I've reached out to the seller and will update my review once I hear back. This server will not boot because it is stuck on the "Configuring Memory" screen. I'm guessing it's because they never tested the server with all of the components installed; instead, they did a basic boot with just one dimm, one power supply, and one CPU. The rest of the drives, DIMMS, CPU, and power supply were then added before it was shipped. It also doesn't have eight 2TB drives; instead, it has a mix of 12 and 4TB drives.

There's a lot of bang for your buck here! I work as an embedded software engineer, and one of my main responsibilities is to compile OpenEmbedded/Yocto Linux images
5/5

Depending on the image configuration and the amount of computing power available, this can take several hours. br>br>I used to use my workstation (a 4C/8T i7-based machine) for a lot of things. I used my current workstation (AMD Threadripper, 4770, 32GB) for these builds, which worked fine, but as I needed to do more of them and preserve the build artifacts for longer, and my current workstation was showing its age, I went looking for a new build machine. br>br>At first, I was looking at things like the AMD Threadripper, but those were expensive, and I just don't trust liquid cooling yet. So I stumbled across this machine and went with ConfigureSystems because they had a nearly 100% rating. And, given Amazon's 90-day money-back "renewed" guarantee if something went wrong, as well as the low 720 price, I figured I had nothing to lose by giving it a shot. br>br>Now, about three weeks later, I'm very pleased with the machine's performance; it arrived as advertised - There was no shortage of memory, disks, or cores. While the machine appeared to have been used (but not abused) on the outside, the inside appeared to be brand new. br>br>I spent the weekend getting to know it (it's not your typical PC) and installing Ubuntu 18. 04. It has a 04 server on it. br>br>It came with eight 2TB SAS drives configured in raid0 striped mode. br>br>So, because that's risky (you lose the entire array if one disk fails), I reconfigured it to use the first two drives in a raid1 (mirrored) configuration for the OS and the remaining six drives in a raid5 configuration for /data. br>br>I installed Ubuntu 18. 04 on my computer. 04 Server can easily be installed on it - You'll need to set up your BIOS for UEFI booting - instead of the default MSDOS, and configure your virtual drive(s) in the controller firmware first. Then I began building tests. br>br> I was completely sold after the first. It was incredible to see 32 cores working nonstop to compile a custom Linux operating system. What took about 6 minutes to complete. I worked on my WS for 5 hours and finished it in 2 hours. This machine has been on for 5 hours, which is very nice. )br>br>The performance was quite amazing for the price, with 6x the memory of my WS, twice the memory bandwidth, a hardware raid controller, and four times the number of cores; I have no regrets, and it is now my primary build machine, where it continues to vastly outperform my previous setup. br>br>It comes with a fully enterprise-licensed version of iDRAC (integrated Dell Remote Access Controller). I learned about it for a while. br>br>The only disadvantage I can think of is that it uses a lot of electricity - At idle, the power consumption is 196W, and the power consumption ranges between 460 and 460W. But that was to be expected with 500W at full tilt. br>br> I can remotely boot the machine when I need it, monitor it, and shut it down when I'm done with it thanks to iDRAC. br>br>As a result - This is my first purchase of this type of hardware, and I am extremely pleased with it.

Windows Server 2012 r2 should be installed here
4/5

Except if you're a power user, 2016 is a no-go. My only criticism of this product is that it did not warn me against using it with a 2016 or 2019 server. The bios, loaded drivers, and drac (Dell remoting hardware) are all set up for 2012/2012r2, and it took me about 24 hours to get 2016 on it (note that 2016 does not fit on a single layer dvd, and the disk drive with the loaded drivers won't read a dual layer correctly in my experience). Aside from that, Wow, what a powerful machine for the price; however, it is quite noisy, so be prepared to deal with acoustic issues if you plan to use it in your home office. It would be fantastic if someone could modify the power supplies and internal fan assemblies to eliminate the noise. Since sound enclosures can cost thousands of dollars, I'd gladly pay a few hundred dollars for it.

For what I needed, it was perfect
5/5

The server has exceeded my expectations. I received a slightly different configuration than I had anticipated, but I did not receive anything less than what I had paid for. UnRaid is currently running flawlessly for me, with an ARK server, two Minecraft servers, a 7 Days to Die server, PLEX server, Urbackup server, ZoneMinder, and several VMs running on it.
