What is the best method to connect the unit, which has a serial com port, to a modern desktop computer? What kind of adapter is there? Would a new port need to be installed in the computer?

It is possible to buy an adaptor, but it is expensive. If you have a USB connection, you can use this method. A Zip 100 (or 250 if you have 250 disks) Zip Drive would be a good investment for you. You'll be able to do this much faster than the parallel version if you have an SCSI card. I have never experienced the click of death with my laptop, and it's now many years old.
