My initial installation of one drive was followed by my addition of a second drive later on. As soon as the second drive was added as a Raid 1 drive, an automatic Raid 1 setup was initiated.
There must be a mistake with Firewolf, HDDs with a 25" size ceased being produced in the 1980s. There is no doubt they intended HDDs with a 5" form factor. The other people who responded didn't read the question asked by the OP. PEOPLE OF PHYSICAL SIZE, PHYSICAL SIZE!
There is no support for 512MB on the DS220j
You can technically do it, but it is Due to the fact that the CPU and memory were not designed for this use case, you will probably experience terrible performance. For a datastore, 512MB of RAM is a very small amount. Media streaming and file sharing seem to be the primary objectives of this model. The DS218/DS218+ is what you're looking for since it has higher CPU performance and read/write caching.

I need a box to be able to mount drives on my PC over ethernet, and then put some drives in it. These devices are normally referred to as NAS devices. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of believing I was purchasing a NAS when this was not the case. The cloud access thingamabob is something fluffy and funky. The thing is, I was under the impression that since they call it a NAS, I would be able to attach it to a network and use it for storage. Not at all. What do I have to do to install the operating system? I had to download it to my computer and install it on my hard drive. Plans called for me to put drives in that have data on them and already have partitions. I do not want to reformat and install some obscure OS I've heard nothing about. It is not even creating a volume on the drive after it has formatted it. I hope I can make use of an Ethernet port to access my volume if I figure out how to create one. The Internet is NOT a means of communication. There's nothing I need in the fluffy bunny world. It is a good cloud storage device if you just want a fluffy bunny and don't care about anything other than "oh, I can access my files anywhere!". Then maybe that thing is for you (I did not test that part, Never in my life have I hated anything I bought on Amazon as much as this. Tomorrow, I'll take it out and shoot it. The target might not be too bad.
I was greeted with a brief instruction sheet when I opened the package, which gave me confidence that I would be able to handle the installation without too much difficulty. As it turned out, I had been wrong all along. In the end, after 4 hours and 1 reset of the manufacturing process, I was able to reboot the NAS. As with many technology companies, Synology offered feedback and tracking options, which I normally decline. What I didn't expect, however, was for the NAS to crash when I declined to participate in their final selection during startup, which combines acceptance of their EULA with participation in their online crap. In order to un-select their tracking garbage, I had to reset the damn NAS, accept their BS, and then accept the new tracker cookie. In the end, it took 4 hours to configure the NAS. The second day of the project is also known as Day In the course of my troubleshooting I noticed additional performance problems. While I was checking for the cause, I grew increasingly concerned. I used a ping test between my Mac and NAS to set up a continuous ping test after installing the NAS OS (not accepting tracking BS the first time). I'm only passing through my router, so there's only one hop. While ping times for packets ranged from 500ms to almost seven seconds, they didn't seem to be particularly long. It is impossible for my dead mother to move packets such fast! In addition to my network nodes that showed normal ping responses (*1ms), I tested other nodes in my network. I also found countless articles that indicated that the NAS operates on terrestrial Ethernet and is configured for 1GB (also what it states per my research). In addition to connecting another router node to the ethernet port of my router, I verified that it was not the cause of the issue (it was not). The second day of our project began to stretch into evening, and I eventually got Time Machine to work with two Macbooks The backups would start, then stop this time. My first thought was that this was a Time Machine problem, so I spent the rest of the evening to resolve this. The idea of making changes to the Time Machine backups took me a long time to exhaust, and one article I read explained it isn't as quick as many expect. Once again, after a late night troubleshooting session, I settled in to sleep and decided to do a test I checked the backups again on day three, and sure enough, they didn't The amount of data moved during the night was 1 GB. Nevertheless, a new feature has been introduced The NAS no longer allows me to log in! You get to the login screen, and that's Surely a couple of power resets could fix the issue, but no! We are talking about a Synology NAS here, and nothing can be that simple. Yes, I know NAS's are not fast devices, but this is complete BS. I've owned NAS's in the past, and yes, I know they're not fast devices. A company as big as Synology should be ashamed to put their name on this garbage. The NAS will be removed today and returned to the owner. The goal of this review is to motivate others to stay away from this product if possible. If you value your time and money at all, stay away from it!.
I believe it is the easiest computer/server setup I have In other words, open the box, install the drives, close the lid, plug in, turn the machine on, and run the setup. php file. That's it. It is now extremely fast to access my 1Gb home network and to write files. As for the unit and the many features that I thought did not exist when I bought it, such as remote NAS access built into the DiskStation Manager (DSM), I'm very happy with it. It draws about 12W sitting there with drive access running on it, so it is very low power, especially with the Barracuda drives. I am using my home Sense power monitor (yeah, it's a pretty neat little box too). When I stand three feet from the unit, I cannot perceive any sound coming from it, which also proves that the unit is quiet. It is a hardware and software combination that is very well conceived. This book is highly.
