Questions & Answers

What level of security does this offer Are there a firewall and an anti-virus on it How do you protect yourself from viruses?

Several features are provided by the DSM software to protect against malicious activity. I was victimized by a ransomware attack in one of my units. This unit was used for storing the CCTV recordings from security cameras, so it does not contain any import items. A so-called man in the middle hack is what I believe I was hit with. The credentials I used to watch the camera images were stolen when I periodically logged in. There was a lack of respect for security on my part. Since I have turned on HTTPS and 2FA (two-factor authentication), I am now using secure connections. It is important to note that the features are there to secure your NAS, but you must use Please accept my sincere thanks for your help.

Would you mind if I put an 8TB drive in this. The number in the middle is 2. Is there a slot for two?

It does not appear to be compatible on the compatibility list. A total of 2 TB are There is something that you need to remember about There are no storage slots in Slot 2 it is used only for caching.

Does this device come with a lot of storage space?

There are none. The hard drives you need are available at a local computer store

Do you have room in here for a 10GB NIC?

If your wireless router supports LACP, you can use it to link the two 1 gig ports together.

Review the situation carefully - This article explains everything you need to know about the Synology DS220+ 2 Bay model
5/5

After this unit met my expectations and met my requirements, I took the time to perform a thorough test just to make this review as detailed as possible. I will be as thorough and accurate as I can. You should know I reviewed the DS220+ 2 Bay model. These models are not included in this review, but there are others available on this same sale page. In a nutshell As a quick answer, I strongly recommend this Synology model to those looking for a quick answer due to its excellent price/performance ratio over its peers. It is impossible to find a better deal for what you get with NAS units are very expensive, and I studied them for two years. In the following paragraphs we will go into the details of this unit *** *** - The following specifications apply to your PC Intel Pentium 4 CPU Intel Celeron J4025 dual-core @ 2 GHz (overclockable ', but I haven't figured out how to make it work )*RAM Two gigabytes (2048 MB) of DDR4 memory is included, which is actually removable and expandable to six gigabytes. Embedded Operating System Linux is probably what sealed the deal for me, along with the upgradeable RAM of 2GB. There are no cheaper options for computers that offer larger portions that are soldered on, meaning you'll have to stick with it until the computers become too slow and outdated to handle increasing file sizes and more demanding applications in intend to use this as a server for websites or web apps, a modular NAS is the way to go. If you want your project to prosper, you will need the ability to expand WITH it. Assuming I'm just using the 2GB of RAM included, this should be sufficient for my current use case, which is simply running scheduled automatic backups. The highest RAM usage I've seen is about 43% upon running two concurrent backups, which leaves a healthy margin. This can be used should I decide to add on another service in the future, such as To ensure that your hard drives are NAS compatible, make sure to purchase 7200RPM drives. Their low error rate ensures that they run continuously 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As a rule of thumb, SSDs are not necessary unless you are backing up large drives (two or more TB). The NAS comes with two Ethernet ports, which are meant to help distribute the load across your network in case it is a bottleneck. *** *** - The pricing system

At $300, this Model doesn't necessarily win the "Lowest Price" award, but it's still a decent model as a whole. One NAS you could safely buy for the lowest price is the QNAP TR-2000 I was going to consider the 002 2 Bay for $147, but they did not provide full specifications, which made it impossible for me to rank it on my list, and I decided to pass on If QNAP had come out on top of my list, I might have put it on the top, but who knows what CPU is included, how much RAM is included, as well as whether it's *** *** - An easy-to-use interface Having been a technology user my whole life, I found the setup to be rather simple. Having set up dozens of operating systems over the past few years, it was a bit different to set up this one. By using a web browser, you can log in via its web interface and follow a few simple setup instructions. The included instructions and the DSM Help app inside the OS don't contain as much information as I would like, so I had to poke around the software to find some settings, and some things (including CPU overclocking) I never found at all. *** *** - The stability of our economy is vital As far as I'm concerned, after 23 days and 17 hours of uptime, I have yet to experience any problems that would hamper my backups and put my data at risk. It has been a smooth sailing experience. For backing up all three of my computers, I have been using Synology's "Active Backup for Business" app. like how the software allows partial backups, making it possible to turn a computer off in the middle of a backup Restart the backup at the end of the backup. Especially important for computers with extremely large hard drives that should not be running 24/7 as this can result in permanent damage to the hard drive. Incredibly easy to set up was the backup software, which installed the client software on each computer and set up a unique or similar backup schedule for each. The backups have been done many times (I have them scheduled for every other day) I have also performed a restore in order to be sure everything worked properly. *** *** - Here are a few things you can do with this There is so much you can do with this NAS that I am not sure I am prepared to write down every single use case. Thank goodness for the cloud. Despite this, I will provide a list of some of the most popular packages *** *** - The ability to backup multiple files - Antivirus software - *Really simple media servers (such as Plex) A web server package (installs Nginx, Apache, and PHP)* - It's a Wordpress
Servers for mail - Is a VPN server - A chat server can be found here - Among many other features and if you're a developer, you can easily decide what frameworks or libraries you'll The Docker
- *Git* at - Identify the node. I'm js*br- It's a pearl
This is PHP
I want to use PHP MyAdmin - The Python language- It has all this, and much more, which makes it a true NAS, and I'm glad that Synology didn't sacrifice usability to simplify. However, advanced features can also be used on the OS. It is still very simple and easy to navigate. In Windows, for example, Terminal isn't accessible from the desktop, however you can enable SSH via the control panel and access Terminal commands from there. To sum up, all in all, as far as price vs. performance is concerned, this easily beats the competition. The company has a low-quality rating The midrange price comes with the midrange quality Today, it is rare to find such a high level of performance. This review is my sincerest hope that it will provide someone with useful information for their own search, because there wasn't nearly enough information when I searched I hope you have found this information helpful, and if so, please help others by upvoting it. Let me know if you have any questions at all and I can try to help you out if you need. Just In the event that Amazon notifies me of your comment, you will receive a response from me.

NAS is a good little device
5/5

As I'm used to building my own systems, this (DS920+) was much cheaper when it came to figuring things out at this size than buying new (using may be My only wish is for 10Gb ethernet to be built into this. With four 8TB seagate drives in SHR-2016, I can basically get line speed of 1Gb for file transfers to and from this. In transcoding 1080p (with subtitles) and doing a parity check, the NAS CPU remains at 50% while updating, installing packages, and running a lot of parity checks. There was no sign of a heat wave.

At the time of this writing, you need to be aware of the following things 1.

In case you are using Plex, you have to do an extra step to enable hardware encoding (even if hardware encoding is It is possible that since this NAS is so new (7/13/2020) at the moment, it has not yet caught up with the current releases. I was able to enable hardware transcoding for my computer by following other people's instructions. You can search Reddit for "reddit plex ds920 transcoding" and find it there. It is likely that the issue will be resolved in a later update of Plex for this model if you do not wish to do this. NAS's current guide as of this writing says that Plex is evaluating it. Two additional points There seems to be a problem with Synology's package manager because not all items available in third-party repositories are listed there. In their OS, there is a flag that they have not set. I am wondering if there is an ETA on when that will be fixed (I assume it will be sometime soon). 3
3. 2 It is reported in online guides that some 16GB RAM modules have been successfully tested in this manner You should take a look at this if you want to upgrade your RAM. In spite of that, I am satisfied so far with this purchase.

The performance of the system is solid if you upgrade the RAM
4/5

This NAS replaced my Windows 10 workstation for backup and video surveillance, and I find it very easy to use. It was quick and easy to setup, but I'd do my homework and google the instructions to accomplish the tasks ahead of time. The setup wizard only walks you through the basic settings of the unit, but doesn't even touch on many of the features that make the unit such a powerhouse. If you make a list of what you want your NAS to do, check the videos on Utube for a good guide and you shouldn't There is one thing I noticed about this unit it only comes with 4GB of RAM. In this case, it should be sufficient for most users. If you plan to use video surveillance or virtual machines, you'll need at least the maximum "supported" amount of RAM. The total amount of memory on this box can be upgraded to 20 GB using non-Volatile Memory The modules supported are listed below. Keep in mind that such modules are not supported by Synology, and we cannot provide you with assistance with any problems you encounter while you have them Having used the 820+ for about two weeks, I found the base 4gg to be useful. I was able to perform basic file sharing and a single backup without any problems. While Plex server was being used, it caused some lagging if other operations were also being performed. In addition, Synology technical support allowed me to add another 4GB to my unit, making my total memory 8GB (maximum supported by Synology). This configuration was much more satisfactory to Plex, and I was able to stream no matter what backup task I was performing. During this time, I decided to throw a wrench into the works and try In particular, Windows will not be happy with anything less than 4gb assigned to the VM depending on the OS you are running. In any case, I was only able to run one VM and even then I was stuttering streams etc. I ended up going outside the specifications and adding a single 16gb dimm to up my 920+ to 20GB. It handles everything I need it to now, and I couldn't be happier. Depending on how long I keep this unit I may want to upgrade to a more powerful CPU unit, but for what it is intended for it handled everything without a hitch. Be sure you upgrade the memory in order to accomplish what you plan on doing.
