As we return to ASUSTOR and the HDMI output intermittently, we could also consider QNAP TS-23 The 453D-type device In a nutshell, A big part of what I do with my NAS is store audio and video files
3/5

Wanted more space than the ASUSTOR NAS provided and thought QNAP might be able to help. Having intermittent issues with HDMI Audio output since the beginning of this project. The sound sometimes is good, sometimes is garbled and broken, and sometimes (like now! A) is a complete failure. A flicker can be seen on the video as well. It's really getting annoying. I have an open Service Ticket with QNAP, but this is getting the better of me. In fact, it took me much longer than the 30 day DOA Amazon policy to configure and put this device into service.
Be aware of that if you purchase This one wasn't a DOA, but had issues that render it unreliable and as such unusable by me. The technicians from QNAP sent me this update

** The 2nd Update **
"I found out that a few users were having the same problem. Version 4 of the firmware does not exhibit this issue. Build 20200529 of Build 2 and Hybrid Desk Station 4 are available. Try downgrading the firmware and hybrid desk station app to see if you can make it work and then test for stable HDMI audio output? Taking a backup of all data prior to downgrading the firmware is a wise choice. If you would like to downgrade, please follow the steps below. It is not my opinion that Firmware downgrading is a viable solution. It seems like a lemon is stuck with me. This is a video I have attached that shows flickering I experience. ** First UPDATE **
After a few cryptic emails back and forth, and only one question asked of me, "Someone" decided it would be nice for me to send it in so they could fix it. That would be a valid option, but I don't think it makes sense for what I need. Here is what I suggest If other failures occur or if the device continues to degrade, warranty work may be required. What's the problem? It would be an extremely foolish thing to do for me to take that risk. Having worked as an electronics technician and an engineer for over 40 years, I am skeptical about the "Repair" of items of this nature. I'm guessing this is also how you feel. I will get intermittent problems after getting an item that has been repaired. These problems will haunt me the entire time I I won't have access to the data for a period of time, to say nothing of the additional time. I can swap out the motherboard on my own if you send it to me, but I don't really want to send it away. . . My primary concern is ensuring that my own data and productivity are protected. I understand your position. It is the HDMI audio and display functions that have caused problems, not the data storage and retrieval so far. My knowledge of this item has been relayed to all parties involved and I feel that the solution posed poses a risk to the privacy of my data. To protect my data, I will need to copy it onto other media on another device. I will have to buy a new device and find someone who will use this one despite its flaws, unless I can find someone willing to use this device If other failures occur or if the device continues to degrade, warranty work may be required. In the end, I'm going to call my experience with QNAP a wash and return to Asustor. There has been a third update to the QNAP Service ticket that I cannot access. Without a resolution, they closed the case. An online survey was sent to me regarding my customer service experience. I essentially said I got a lemon and I would like to donate it to the local high school science club if they are able to ASUSTOR will be discussed next. My time with QNAP is over, and I wish you all the best.

The product is good, the deal is good, and it's fun to play with
4/5

The Diskstation has been compared to Synology a lot. During my 10 years using Synology, I accumulated several pieces of hardware. I mostly used it as a storage and a reverse proxy, but I did not do much else with it. My plan was to get the cheaper licenses of Qnap's security cameras. I was surprised at how well it turned out. The UI is said to be bad in many reviews. It seems to me that the user interface is okay. I had lots of fun with lots of configurations, though I needed to do a lot of research before making a decision on the configurations. In my case, I mostly use it to stream videos from security cameras. We were able to upgrade our memory without any trouble. I was able to add one 16GB (Timetec Hynix IC) to make it 20GB without any issues. Since I do not want to run VMs, I did not add the PCIe SSD cache. I found cheap PCIe cards that work with NVMe M that I was able to use instead. The second memory is 2 MB. The later might be the best time for me. This was a better deal from a hardware perspective than Synology, meaning you did not have to buy the original expansion card. I'm a bit concerned about the security of the program since you can run 3rd party software on it, which could be riskier from a security point of view. As a rule, I do not put sensitive data on NAS. Keeping things offline is the best form of security.

Update With the cheap PCIe card for NVMe M, I found one problem that I did not like after 2 months. Since I have only two memory sticks, I can use the SSD only as cache. My Qtier skills are not up to par. In addition, it is not suitable for use as a cache memory for writing cache, since it might fail before it is written to my hard drive. In light of this, I prefer Synology as a better option for storage if you really want M. Because of its built-inness in Synology NAS, it comes with 2 SSDs. If I have to buy the RAID PCIe card, Qnap is not cheaper. Well, at least I can still buy security camera licenses at a discount. I took away one star because of this.

QNAP systems are in question because of security problems
3/5

Obviously, after I bought the product it came to light that there is malware that can steal all your documents and e-mails. You may then be liable for ransomware on your entire home network. The standard check to fix it has been "update your firmware" not much information about how it enters or what steps have been taken to fix it. While I enjoy having a NAS system in my home, I am unable to recommend this product at this time due to security concerns. Everyone should place this at the top of their priority list. Other than a few concerns about security, which I hope can be addressed soon, this seems like an exciting product. NAS is the first server I have bought for my home, and I would recommend acquiring it only if you have a good understanding of network protocols. If you don't know what you're doing, you can leave yourself quite vulnerable. The cost of the device would be enough to earn it four stars, but it doesn't come with any security features. If you have the time, you can set up a NAS for much.

You should go with Synology if you are a Plex user
3/5

This NAS was something I wanted, but I am actually kicking myself for buying it. It was easy to install, but the process of installing the software I need is not intuitive. I was prepared for that, but then I learned that all the software they brag about has licensing fees, including the software license for accessing external hard drives using The only choice I would have made if it were my choice again would have been My choice is to either build my own home server or at least buy one so that I am sure it has the CPU power to perform the tasks I need it to perform. I also had to find a workaround to access the directory where the Plex system files are kept in the NAS file system, which was hard to do if you plan on using this NAS as a Plex server.
