WD Discovery allows you to learn about software from its partners and download other WD apps. There was no documentation included with the drive, but according to the WD website, "WD Discovery includes the ability to download and keep up to date other WD apps". As far as the last part is concerned, it sounds like a big piece of adware, but for curiosity's sake I tried installing it in Sandboxie (a virtualized environment which guarantees clean uninstallation). Sandboxie could not install WD discovery because it attempted to install a kernel driver that is not supported by Sandboxie. I find it hard to understand why a program whose stated purpose is to help download other apps needs a kernel driver.

It then becomes difficult to eject the drive as it gets stuck as "in use. ". The WD external hard drive I own will almost certainly be my last. I have nine others, but this is the last one I will purchase.

After installing the included software, I ran a full WD diagnostics and then started the drive. This drive stopped working after just 10 hours of backup usage and will no longer mount (or unmount) on any of my systems (Win7, Windows 10, or Apple Mac). This now causes it to make the clicking sound others have reported. Since the late 1980s, I have had no problems or incidents with WD drives, both internal and external. The movie was a disappointment, so it gets a lower rating.

I originally purchased a 1TB WD Drive (previous model) and when I tried to write to it on my 2018 MacBook Pro the speed was too slow. It was my intention to upgrade my 5TB hard drive to this newer 4TB one, but the first one I received wouldn't It is working fine after I replaced it with the same item. This product works well on both my Mac and my wife's PC and is fast and quiet. Out of the brands I've only used once in the past decade, I'll never buy that brand again) and switch to WD instead!.
