Questions & Answers

What makes this mini different from the Thunderbolt?

The only difference between the two drives, if I understand your question correctly, is that the one you're referring to has a USB 3.0 port. The drives themselves are identical, with one having a USB 3.0 port and the other having a Thunderbolt port. If you have an older computer with a USB port, the USB 3.0 drive will work. It is compatible with the 0 port. When connected to a USB 3.0 port, the drive runs at its fastest. 0 port, but it can also be used with a USB 2. 0 port; the Thunderbolt drive will only work with a computer that also has a Thunderbolt port; Thunderbolt is faster than USB, but it isn't widely used yet. Step one: Determine which ports are available on your computer. Regardless of which port it connects to, the LaCie drive is a workhorse. (P. Some hard drives are compatible with both USB and Thunderbolt.

Is this a reliable source of information? state-of-the-art (flash-based) storage device?

I came across this page while searching on Amazon for a LaCie solid-state (SSD) external portable drive. The majority of the reviews do not mention SSD, and it appears that all of the reviews for this LaCie external drive's various models have been combined. So far, four people have said no, claiming that this isn't about SSD drives, and one has said yes. The majority of people will opt for a model in the $150-$200 range rather than an SSD model because it is significantly more expensive. The ones with SSD cost a lot more than that, so expect to pay at least $250. If you have the money, it's also worth it because they're so fast that there's no comparison. This is what appears at the top of the auction page if I scroll up from the Question section, but these same questions and reviews will appear regardless of which model you search for, albeit under a different name: br>LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 External Hard Drive LAC9000602 LAC9000602 LAC9000602 LAC9000602 LAC9000602 0 SSD 1TB Portable Hard Drive

Can I use it in my Windows 8 system even though I don't own a Mac?

It can be set up to work with any operating system. I recall having the option of dividing it between Windows and Mac OS as well. I made the decision to make it 100% OS configured.

Why is it necessary to reformat this for use with MAc?

I'll make a comment about how to use Mac Disk Utility. I thought I knew how to use it, but my new LaCie 2TB drive only had 400 MB of storage space. Click "View" in the upper left corner of Disk Utility and select "Show All Devices." Then go to the top level of the hard drive and select "LaCie Rugged USB-" from the drop-down menu. Select "C Media" and then "Erase" from the drop-down menu: Give it a name and then select Format: Scheme: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) GUID Partition Map is a GUID representation of a partition map. (Mine was set to Master Boot Record by default, and it only displayed the small partition.) ) I was terrified until I was able to get it to display the entire 2TB.

It's not something you should buy

*UPDATE AUGUST 27th
I went through their technical support process, and at the end of it, they give you a case number and tell you to call during business hours, which I've been trying to do since 8 a. m. , but I keep getting a busy message that says "I'm sorry, all circuits are busy now, please try again later. " It's nearly ten o'clock. How will I be able to recover my files if I am unable to contact the company? br>I purchased this on July 22nd, and it is now August 26th. It went on for about a month and a half. My computer does not have enough storage capacity to hold all of the files I save and work on because I freelance. Now I'm missing all of the files I made for my clients. This is a significant reduction in my earnings and the ability of my clients to re-hire me. Previous projects can be reused or updated. Disappointed to the core. This device is no longer recognized by any of the computers into which I have plugged it. I have four other external hard drives, one of which is from 2006, and they all work like a charm. br>br>DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT unless you want to waste years of your life panicking about not being able to do your job properly and missing deadlines while trying to figure out how to fix this broken thing.

I've never encountered such bad customer service
3/5

I'm surprised that a well-known company could have such poor customer service! The product won't work on my laptop-- It's due to a technical problem. However, when I went to the Lacie website to enter my information, I was met with chatbots and error messages. Their website's tech phone number isn't working - There's no one at home, that's for sure! br>br>Then I got tired of chatting with chatbots who told me to go to Seagate Inc. , which led to an expired web link. Then I got a live person on chat support, who had no idea how to provide technical support, so I ended the conversation. True story: later that night, I receive a chat message from Seagate. It came from a chatbot and directed me to an old website. Quite honestly. br>br> I'm sure my minor issue could have been resolved if LaCie had stood behind their product, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Take a look somewhere else. br>br>Recent changes: br>br> It now functions properly. Update 11br>br>Quite wellbr>br> 21 for no apparent reason, it began to work, and I now enjoy the product, but I stand by my negative customer experience with this company.

WARNING! BUYING THIS PRODUCT IS A MISTAKE! After a few months, the hard drive is dead
3/5

I waited a long time to write a review, so the majority of the reviews below are from shortly after purchase. These hard drives aren't working properly. When you copy files to them, you can hear them click. Only when I needed to leave town did I use it. My hard drive died after a few months of being used a couple of times a month. Because Lacie was acquired by Seagate, you must return your drive via Seagate's website, where you will receive an error message when entering the model and serial numbers. So you'll have to contact Seagate to arrange a return, which they'll tell you will set you back $50. I returned mine and received a replacement; however, 5 months later, the drive will no longer open, and I will lose all of my data once more. Purchases should be avoided.

It's so tough that it won't even make it through shipping
3/5

This "Rugged" Drive didn't even make it to the other side of the ocean. This is my second LaCie drive, and my first one was also defective. Both my Mac and PC were unable to mount the unit. Disk management did not show the drive and it was constantly beeping. I've requested an RMA and will be ordering a Western Digital drive; I'm tired of overpaying for overrated drives.

Great! It lasted until two weeks after I received it, when it died
3/5

This worked perfectly until my hard drive died about two weeks after I bought it. Fortunately, I was able to save all of the files on this drive, but I believe I was given one with a faulty interface. I'm a college student, and I was using this drive to edit for my film classes. Connecting to my computer took an eternity, and accessing the files on it was a different story. It would have to load any and all files for a period of 20 minutes. It took me 30 minutes to get them ready to use. It was extremely inconvenient, and after spending so much money on it, I am hoping to have mine replaced by Lacie as soon as possible. Other friends of mine have used this drive and had no issues, so I know my problem is unique to my drive, which I plan to replace as soon as possible.

This isn't even close to being rugged! It was "Rugged" that drew me to it
3/5

I've dropped my much less expensive Seagate several times with no issues. The La Cie Rugged died after falling off my couch and landing on my carpeted floor. My computer crashes because I am unable to access any files. It was a complete waste of money, and I was extremely dissatisfied. I misplaced an entire wedding that I had just finished editing, totaling around 20 hours of work. Thankfully, I had backed up all of my RAW files and they were still on the cards.

Unreliable and glitchy
3/5

It doesn't appear to be going well. I took it out of the box and immediately began transferring files. I haven't dropped it or altered it in any way. My computer has had to restart a few times as a result of it. Then I get an error message telling me that something needs to be done. I can't get back the time I spent moving files, and I don't have time to return it and get a new drive, so I'll just have to use this one as a backup for Google Photos and never rely on it to work. I was extremely disappointed. A hard drive should be dependable, according to my expectations. This game has a lot of bugs.

Never again, please! Over the course of about 18 months, I went through three of these
3/5

They all failed in a short period of time, and I lost the information on them (which unfortunately included photos of my children). ) I strongly advise you to research a different brand.
