Now, the quality of the microphone is as good as it has ever been.

I bought this to fix it. The digital audio noise that accompanied that problem has since been resolved, but there is still some in the audio. When you want to be heard in meetings, you need to dial down the mic in Windows settings to 50% or else high pitched chatter will be heard. I've had poor luck with the line-out as well, though it's not perfectly quiet either. For the price, the product is great.

The adaptor is a device that has 3 mm TRS microphone and headphone jacks and it connects to my computer's USB port. I plugged the headset into the adaptor and plugged the cord into the USB port. These instructions worked on a linux as well as a mac. The loudness of the microphone on both recordings had to be turned down to the absolute smallest setting to get a listenable recording, and even then, it sounded like it was going to blow My efforts to find a solution ended up costing me days and I finally bought my own USB device (from I love how it works.
