Questions & Answers

Would it be possible to let me know if this is a spinning disc or a solid state drive? I appreciate your kind words! ?

Here is the item's name The Sandisk Portable SSD (SOLID STATE Drive) is a portable hard drive. It can clearly be concluded that it is not a Yes, they're joking, or at least I am. As a matter of fact- However, here is the thing The drive does not contain moving or spinning disks, and it is therefore a "Solid State Drive.".

Do you think this drive would be able to run an OS on it?

Yes, I agree! The two I am using for this are Lenovo. Be aware that you may need to change the settings of your system to use them. On mine, I had to change the SATA controller mode to AHCI from RAID, the UEFI to Legacy and boot priority to Legacy first. Then you'll be able to enjoy how fast it runs once those settings have been fixed. My main Fedora installation consists of a 1TB drive for storage, and Fedora Security Spin is installed on a 500 GB drive so I can recover data and fix customer No issues have also been encountered during the installation of CentOS and Linux Mint.

I was wondering if I can use this to backup not just my PC, but also my Macbook? Would it be possible to save files from both HDs on one? What is the difference between a 2012 laptop and a HP desktop computer?

I have a fairly simple setup at home, one that I use almost exclusively Install Mac on your computer. I have already formatted it and partitioned it for 200 GB HFS+ and 800 GB APFS as soon as I took it out of the box. On the HFS+ partition, Time Machine runs, while on the APFS partition, there are four volumes (the APFS partition has variable capacity between the volumes). The way I would use this in a mixed environment is as follows The partitions you use for Time Machine must be in HFS+ (APFS cannot be used) Files that will only be used on a Mac will be stored on an APFS partition It is also recommended to create a partition in ExFAT for those instances when you need to be able to access files in both Windows and You should also keep the USB if you have it Plugging in a USB cable It is a connector that comes with the drive it is about six tenths of an inch long USB cable with a diameter of one inch There are two C connectors on each end.

I don't know what I'm missing since I can't get it to work when I plug it in Neither my computer nor my phone displays it. Do I need to download anything?

Thankfully, I have two of them and am about to get a third one. No additional software is required to run them (at least on computers running Windows and Linux). The reason I reformatted it to NTFS was because I switch between OSes. There is one thing to keep in mind about the USB "A" adapter - it is notched, so it will only fit on one side completely. It could be a bad one, return it if it doesn't fit.

A fantastic drive, but it absolutely must be formatted
4/5

During the drive, you will enjoy the scenery. small, light, and it delivers on its promised 550 MB/s, which is fantastic for a device of this size. That said, if you would like to use this drive for anything other than movies, music, and pictures, you are going to need to format it first. If you wish to use the drive to back up your phone or computer, this is especially true. As soon as the drive is unpacked, it is formatted with exFAT and has a 1 MB allocation size. Thus, any file that is less than 1 MB takes up 1 MB. On a 250 GB hard drive, 1 MB may seem like a very small amount The two-terabyte drive is enough, but when you have all those small files on backups taking up 1,000 times as much space as normal, it adds up quickly. You can see in the attached pictures that a small text file takes up 2,700x more space than it really occupies and that a 177 GB backup takes up 73 GB more space than it should. I mention this because it's a very simple It is clear from the command line that the sector size on the drive is 512 bytes, which implies that a relatively large allocation is unnecessary. In order to format your hard drive, you need to select an allocation size smaller than 1 MB and format it as exFAT. The factory 1 MB allocation size is far less efficient that Microsoft's recommended 128 KB allocation size, but you can go as small as 4 KB or as large as 256 KB and still be more efficient than that.

Thousands of travel photos were lost over a five-year period
3/5

There's something wrong with this drive. I had no problems using it for the first month, but now my Lightroom profile won't load, and I can't export my photos. No matter what you do with the drive, whether it be transferring files onto it, or transferring files off of it, it will randomly hang. The 1 TB Hard Drive I own will hang in the middle of transferring 5 GB of data because I bought it yesterday It starts to work after 3 gigabytes, but then completely freezes (see attached Can't open up Lightroom/Productivity because Portfolio freezes before it has a chance to open. This hard drive is the only one on my computer that is not working. There were five years of travel photos that were lost. SanDisk will never make it onto my shopping list again. I only buy Samsung SSDs moving forward.

A couple of months after it was installed, the application started corrupting files and data
3/5

My girlfriend and I have been sandisk fans for several years by buying many terabytes of memory in different Their quality has become more important to me than other brands because I started out in photography with them. Because I value the protection of my data and files, I didn't mind paying a higher premium for the service. My first real problem is an insidious one, and it's the first time I've had a serious issue. As after a couple of months of ownership, I have experienced a problem with it corrupting files while I am saving them, without any error message or notice. A few hours later, the file is either missing data or is entirely unreadable, so everything I did.

Buying a USB SSD drive is the best move you can make! I urge you not to focus on My MacBook Pro needed to be backed up to an SSD
5/5

SuperDuper software was used to backup my data using a spinning hard drive and it was a painfully slow process. Typically, it took between 30 minutes and an hour for 500GB of data to be backed up and restored. Considering I have an internal SSD on my MacBook Pro, it made complete sense that the destination backup would also be stored on an SSD drive where the transfer speeds would be drastically improved. There is one more consideration to be made A spinning hard drive has a much higher failure rate than a SSD. There were so many spinning backup drives I purchased in the past that ultimately failed that I cannot even begin to tell you how many I have purchased. In the future, SSDs will be the only drives to be used, and since the prices have dropped on these drives it makes no sense to stay away from Before selecting this SanDisk 1TB drive, I researched a number of SSD drives. My first choice was a Samsung in a metal case with a colorized design. Although the Samsung drives were reviewed positively, I seemed to believe there were some major issues with the embedded software as there was a difficult time removing it. It is not something anyone wants to happen when trying to buy an SSD drive.

Reading the SanDisk Extreme's reviews, I was able to see that I would find this to be perfect. were very positive across the board. There were no embedded programs. At the time of this writing, this particular SSD has been deemed as one of the fastest USB drives on the market. As I approached the drive, I was surprised to discover that it is really quite short. You'd never believe how small it is. Your jeans pocket would not feel it and you could fit it in there. In recent years, we've made significant progress in the portability of external SSD drives. As you can tell, I don't like the cover on this drive. It draws dust like crazy. Upon place it on my table it started collecting hair from the air as soon as I placed it. The good news is that it is so tough that you can drop it from just about any height and it will survive. It's more important than anything else, I guess. Having a USB-driven drive is nice to have, even though the drive doesn't come with one Connect the USB cable to the C cord It is an There is also no wiggle in the cord when connected to the drive. Only downside I can think of with the cord is that it's too short.

In my photos, I have included the result of a recent backup I performed on my MacBook Pro via the in the screenshot that 425GB of data was backed up within 30 minutes. If the drive had spun manually, that would have taken two hours. This is 3 times longer than before. You will find that this drive is very fast! You can use it in Windows as it is formatted for that operating system. It is the same as buying one for your laptop, but you have to find DISK UTILITY (in your applications folder), select the SanDisk drive, and click Formatting the drive in OSX Extended Journaled should be your first step. Shortly after you finish formatting, you'll see the results. This is by far the best SSD drive I have ever owned. You can then transfer data to the drive. You should not hesitate to prioritize this over any other option.

The format for a large number of small files is NTFS, and I am happy with the result
5/5

This came in ExFAT format when I bought it, and I tried copying my 16GB folder, which contains 750,827 files, and 20,483 folders, from it to another hard drive. Since it could not copy the entire 16GB directory onto the 500GB drive, I formatted to NTFS, which took all of two seconds. After reading a little bit about ExFAT, I determined that I needed to use smaller files and formatted to NTFS. Once I had done that, I was able to successfully copy all of my files (130GB) onto the Sandisk 500GB drive. As a matter of fact, this thing FLYS! This is a great game, and I hope it lasts a long time.

A fast and very expensive way to travel
5/5

This is an incredibly fast and small machine. The performance of this external drive is far better than that of my other external drives. The cons are Large file transfers use a lot of power and this SSD runs hot.
