You can operate in either indoors or outdoors depending on what kind of environment you're in. If you're talking about normal mode, then the answer is, no it doesn't. Whether you do it this way or not, it sounds awesome.
The only time I have ever been impressed with their sound is when I had a set of Bose 901s from the early 1980s. There is a dull and boomy tone to the music. It is cleaner to use JBL. The reference speakers I use in my recording studio are JBL monitors.

The most expensive, most convenient, and most badass option available. The carrying cases I bought recently can easily fill up a medium check for two of these (two of these in case will fill up a medium check for one of these) I recently bought four of these with the carrying cases and took them to Turks and Caicos for a wedding The bag is in it.
While I was on the trip I saw more than four different people buy these, so they definitely were a hit with everyone. It goes without saying that we played music on the beach and around the pool with 4 speakers to provide an immersive surround sound experience. In fact, the resort workers were complimenting the sound over their own system as well. I've even heard of a friend of mine buying these for their boat instead of installing speakers outside. The truly versatile and portable design allows them to go anywhere with you. It's only downside is that they cost a lot. They certainly sound best when you have more than one to take full advantage of the surround sound effect. You don't have to turn your speakers up as loud thanks to multiple speakers as you'll still hear the nice bassy punch at mid-volume This volume is quite high.
On the papers, the bass note appears to hit a bit lower than it did on the record. Whenever I see this thing, it's never going to leave my side.

My old JBL Xtreme is louder than this new JBL boombox at high volume. I bought this for outdoor parties, but the volume is too low at high volume. This JBL boom box badly needs a firmware update.
I am amazed at the amount of versatility this device offers. Huge battery, long battery life, loud sound, waterproof, and so much more. In the first few moments I spilled water all over it and no big deal, it is water proof! I purchased it for my daughter's birthday, and it was definitely impressive. Right out of the gate I was carrying too many things and spilled water all over it, no problem. This thing produced a ton of sound when I set it up outside for our party, and everyone at the party was amazed. Having my Note 8 charged on it for a whole day with no problems is amazing. You get a week and a half of use from it. The quality of your work is exceptional. It might have been better to have the rear rubber flap a little higher up so the USB cables aren't so close to the speaker in case someone accidentally rolls it backwards while it has accessories plugged in, but that's just my opinion. I would definitely buy from them again.
As it is quite heavy, I was a bit nervous to put this in the water. In the water, it performed well as advertised. The boat can hit some deep bass while in the water, and it's very enjoyable to watch. The speaker needs to allow users to flip through songs from the speaker itself, as I suggest for future models. The process of getting out of the water to do that was a little difficult. Despite its coolness, I will still give it 5 stars because I consider it one of my favorite products. Despite my expectations, the battery life and sound quality were far beyond what I expected.

As soon as I opened the box and fired it up I was blown On indoor or outdoor settings, the sound is warm and pleasant. When it's on indoor mode, I usually leave it there. Floated it at a pool party and took it to a beach party. Our jaws dropped when we heard it only were they producing sound, but they could also hear what people were saying.
