Questions & Answers

Is it just me, or does this appear to be far too simple to beat or steal?

For the past seven years, I've worked as a sales manager for Vivint, a company that installs, warranties, and replaces stolen security cameras. I pay a monthly service fee for my own personal system, but I'm not responsible for any broken or stolen equipment. That gives me a sense of security. I am a firm believer in getting what you pay for. I looked into Nest, but Vivint seemed like a safer, better option because the outdoor cameras record video 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rather than sending pictures to my phone. As a smart home and security professional, these are just some ideas to ponder.

Is there a cheaper way to save footage than paying $600 a year to have Nest record my 3 cameras?

After reading all of the comments about Google's price, I decided to do some research on my own. I'm curious why people pay to have wired IP cameras installed, which connect to a central NVR unit with a hard drive and can record weeks of footage for free, as well as be viewed live and recorded using a free APP. Yes, there is a cost for installing cables, cameras, and the main unit, but everything is secure and centralized.br>Another option is wifi cameras with cables to power camera using adapter connect to outlets, this cameras have a slot for mini SD so no central unit to record (NVR), but it will record in each camera for FREE and APP free and you can have a large mini SD card and record more time.br>In either case, if you know how to run cables, make some br>I didn't see the point in paying $120 for a single camera or $350 for four. Ring and Nest cameras are also more expensive than other wifi cameras available, such as LTS and GNS.

How long is the power cord that comes with the Nest outdoor camera?

Thank you for contacting us, Adi. The Nest Cam Outdoor comes with a 25-day battery life. Long, weatherproof power cable that can be used outside. Thanks!

Is there something that connects to your router inside that you can use to make the connection? If that's the case, what are your options? To connect, what are the requirements for your router?

For those who need to extend the power cords on these, I'll mention that it can be done if you know how. br>These are meant to be powered by a nearby electrical outlet and connected to the internet via WiFi. In terms of setting these up, there are two issues that I would personally address. 1) There isn't a backup battery. 2) The location of the cameras is determined by your electrical outlets. From what I've learned, USB extension cables are available, but why stop there when you can take it a step further? While the intended method of powering these is geared toward ease of setup, which is fine, as an IT professional, I'd prefer a little more professional grade setup. That's why I looked up Remote USB Power over Ethernet adapters and discovered that they can be used with this specific camera. On one end, there's a PoE Ethernet port, and on the other, there's a USB port. I'm sure Nest doesn't support this, but they're inexpensive and would allow me to convert the power cord from USB to something I'd be much more comfortable running through my house to a central location, CAT-II. Ethernet cable with a speed of 5 Gigabits per second (5 Gigabits Because USB power is only 12 volts, it can only be used for a short period of volt DC power, similar to PoE power, can be delivered over a low-gauge Ethernet cable by a PoE enabled switch. As a result, I can connect their power to a battery backup unit and wire them to a central telecom closet in my house, just like traditional DVR cameras. This would not, however, eliminate the need for a WiFi connection for data. If you plan on using these when the power goes out, just make sure your internet will still work after the electrical grid goes down. In the event of a power outage, DSL will function, but it will be extremely slow. I'm assuming fiber works in the event of a grid outage, but it's probably similar to cable internet in that it depends on whether the carrier maintains any kind of auxiliary power on their nodes in your area. br>You can always connect them the way they're supposed to be connected, to a local outside electrical outlet with a lock box around it, but I'd rather use the Ethernet conversion to make them PoE devices, at least for power. br>If the power goes out at my house, I get a notification on my phone, alerting me that I should check on things or have someone else check on things, but it would be nice to be able to check on things remotely even if the power is out.

Good at first, but once your return/trial period has expired, it quickly degrades due to backend provider issues
3/5

When your return/trial period is up, it starts out well, but quickly deteriorates. br>br>I really wanted to like this product, and during the 30-day Nest Aware trial period, I would have written a glowing review. Installation was simple (more on that later), and the app, as well as historical footage viewing, worked flawlessly. Clearly, my home internet was more than capable of delivering the required upstream, as I was able to view the cam from a variety of apps and internet connections with little to no buffering (1-second). One time, no more than 2 seconds). The alerts were very effective. Everything started to go downhill after the trial period ended and Nest charged me for my first month of service. The alerts were no longer going off. It was impossible to watch in real time. It became impossible to watch historical footage. My new best friend was the buffering wheel. Nest said it was due to a problem with my internet connection, which could have been on the camera or wherever I was connecting from. Nothing had changed on my home network, and I was accessing the camera over 50 gig LTE and a business fiber connection, just as I had been before the paid period began, with the same issues. This was NOT on my end, but they refused to help me because it was an internet problem "on my end. " My home network's throughput has remained constant over the last month. My downstream speeds are the same as they were a month ago at the other locations. br>br>From there, Nest largely ignored the problem, and a quick Google search reveals that this isn't an uncommon occurrence. Consider millions of these cameras uploading 300 GB of data per month, and millions of users attempting to stream that data. I simply don't believe Nest has the hardware infrastructure to handle that volume of data, and the company simply gives you a "priority lane" during the trial period to deceive you into thinking the service is reliable until your return period expires. In terms of setup, br>br> With the exception of the power cable design, everything was simple and straightforward. On one end, there's a massive white plastic block. the video camera On the other hand, a large white block of plastic has been placed around a USB plug in order to weatherproof it. This is a wire that will have to pass through a hole in the structure of your home, and they made it nearly an inch in diameter, requiring you to drill a MUCH larger hole than is actually required. Fortunately, I was able to enter through a plastic attic vent in the eave and exit through sheetrock, but it was far more difficult than it should have been because I was replacing a camera with a standard DC barrel connector wire and had to enlarge all of the pass-throughs. throughs. br>br>Also, keep an eye on your fingers when they're near the magnet mount.

The thievery was caught on camera
5/5

My Christmas package was stolen from my driveway, but thanks to the camera, we were able to identify the license plate and the thief, resulting in his arrest and the recovery of my package. People were blown away by the video's quality when I shared it on social media.

With a few tweaks to the services, this COULD be the best
3/5

This camera isn't very useful if you don't intend to pay for Nest Aware, which costs either $100 or $300 per year. Either you'll get a lot of annoying alerts that aren't important, or you won't get any at all. They don't really tell you how bad the camera is unless you're aware of the situation. Without Nest Aware. br>br> br>With video, you can only get a live feed. br>(Some) alert snapshots are provided to you. There are no Zone alerts. br>You can only look at the last three hours. (This means you'll either get a lot of annoying alerts that don't matter to you, or you won't get any alerts at all. )br>Because you only have picture snapshots, a lot of alerts won't even have anything in the picture because the motion detection was detected too late. It can also be difficult to determine what the EVENT is at times. br>br>Easy fix for making this $200 piece of hardware usable. br>1) Make zone alerts a possibility. br>2) Make 5-minute videos instead of taking photos. (Beginning just before the motion activation was triggered) 10 second video br>3) Keep it for at least three hours. I believe you should try for at least 24 hours. Alternatively, you could. br>br> br>For $50 per year, do a 5-day feed.

It makes me happy, but it also makes me sad - More subscription offers are needed for the Nest Aware service
3/5

For several reasons, I have conflicting feelings about this product. I purchased five of these with the intention of installing them all on the same day; however, I have only installed two so far. I'm thinking about returning the rest. I did some research and this is probably one of the best security cams out there. It was very simple to install, offers great video and audio quality, great features for motoring and playback, 2 way audio, and so on. You're good to go if you have a strong WiFi signal in multiple areas of your home (I have access points all over mine) and a power outlet. There's no need to worry about changing camera batteries or connecting to a proprietary hub with a limited range; it's almost plug-and-play. On my iPhone (iOS 10) I had trouble setting up my first camera using the Nest app - Looking for WiFi networks was the only part of the app that hung. So I connected the USB end of the camera to my computer and ran the software. exe, and configure it accordingly. When installing the camera wire through walls, the USB power connection combined with the cylinder lock mechanism from the camera to the power connector caused me to drill a hole much larger than was required. They should've provided a disconnect or a locking plug-in, at the very least. That way, you won't have to drill such a large hole to feed it through on both ends. It worked for a while after I installed it, but then it became unresponsive. I had to restart my router and switch the WiFi channel from 1 to auto. So far, everything has gone well. The Nest Aware cloud storage service, which provides monitoring features and saves your history, is my biggest gripe. This was discovered after I had already purchased the item - They require this information to be clearly stated in the product description on Amazon's website, as it is currently unavailable. The issue is that their Nest Aware cloud storage offering only has two cloud storage subscription options for storing your history. Don't get me wrong, it comes with some great features, but the cloud storage prices are a little high, especially if you have multiple cameras. Here's where it gets interesting: down: As of October 24, 2016, the following is the status: br>br>1) Ten-day - $100 per year per camera, plus $50 for each additional camerabr>br>So for me - That works out to $300 per year - to keep 10 days of footage for five of my cameras On which I have already spent $1000. OR - br>br> They also have the following options:br>br>2) 30 day - $300 per year / camera with a discount 50% discount per camera ($150 per year)

This is ridiculous for home consumers who wish simple home security
