Selected User Reviews For Epson Perfection 3170 Photo Scanner
I've had great success using mine for documents, photos, slides, and negatives. In most cases, color correction improves scanned images over the original, but in some cases, the features must be disabled. br>br>While the included PaperPort software (version 8) was excellent, it failed to recognize Windows folders. Scansoft, on the other hand, provided a very affordable "upgrade" to Version 9 Deluxe, which I consider to be an excellent scan management package. Their user interface is a bit clunky, and most tasks will require you to switch to professional mode. (The default "idiot" mode simply lacks the features you'll require. ) I wish they had a more user-friendly way of saving profiles, such as the ability to name them. I haven't upgraded to version 10 because I don't require any additional features.
I just finished packing my Epson 3170 for return. I had it for a day and was able to coax some excellent scans from some old color negatives during that time. br>I say "coax" because my unit quickly developed a problem where it would emit a high-pitched beep every now and then. The red trouble light would flash in response to a high-pitched squeal. The problem could be resolved by turning the unit off and on again, but this is not always the case. When I told Epson about the problem, they suggested one possible solution (moving the transport-lock lever back and forth), but it didn't work. br>So it was a faulty unit. I would have ordered a replacement had it not been for the fact that Epson's scanning software is as bad as any I've seen running on Windows XP. I did several cold starts, then uninstalled the entire scanning suite and reinstalled only the "Epson Scan" software. After that, it seemed to work, though it's an awkward design at best. br>I like Epson's design for handling slides and negatives of various sizes, but I can't really recommend the 3170 based on my experience.
This one makes me feel a little conflicted. While it produces some excellent scans, the software that purports to be of assistance (such as the copy function or scan and mail) is actually the hammer in the chair padding. It takes some time to realize that we will perform much better without the garbage Epson includes with the default installation. br>br>On its own, the scanner is extremely versatile, fast, and has excellent color reproduction. It works with MF film, which simplifies a lot of things for the creative photographer. I'm not sure it has as much physical resolution as it claims, but it's decent and reliable enough for me. It elevates your work to a level that was previously out of reach (in monetary terms) for the majority of us only a few years ago. br>br>I'd rate it a 3 out of 5 stars. 5 stars. For the price range, the hardware is 5 stars, but the software is 0 stars.
is a writer and entrepreneur. For the money, this is an excellent scanner. It went into Windows XP Home quickly and without a hitch. Simply ensure that you first install software before connecting the scanner. So far, I've only scanned in black and white. Negatives in color that are of exceptional quality. With black/white, I've had similar results. photos in color I usually use Adobe 7 to touch up my older photos that need restoration. I've read everything there is to know about this scanner and haven't run into any issues; Dirt under the glass or a high-pitched squeal during scanning are examples. Epson's lack of a good reference manual is the product's biggest flaw in my opinion. Overall, this is a fantastic product, and I don't believe you'll find a better one in this price range.
This scanner is available for purchase. Sure, it's not the most recent model, but it's half the price, and the sensitivity and resolution are comparable to much more expensive models! You can toss the scanning software out the window. Make use of the software that came with your photo editing program, such as Adobe PhotoShop or PaintShop Pro. Although the Epson software is adequate, other apps are more user-friendly. We have a large number of negatives and slides to scan. This scanner performs admirably, and the scans it produces are excellent. We've been using it for over a year and have had no issues. This is a fantastic photo/slide scanner for the money.
2 Users are content. After reading reviews, I was a little concerned that I would run into software issues, and I did--at first. During preview, the scanner would frequently halt. I sent Epson an email, and they responded quickly and thoroughly. I made the mistake of running Classic (OS 9) alongside OSX. Things were a little perplexing. br>Everything has been smooth sailing since I made sure OS 9 was turned off. I haven't had much experience with the Smart Panel, so I can't speak to it, but the scanner works well with Adobe Photoshop. Even on hi-res, it feels fast. scans at a higher resolution To me, the quality appears to be excellent. I like being able to run multiple scans at the same time. Someone previously suggested downloading drivers from the Epson website. I think it's a great idea, and I agree. It gets two thumbs up from me.
I bought this scanner to replace one that had been damaged by a roof leak. I'm not sure why Epson stopped making it because it's the best scanner I've ever had, and the seller delivered it much sooner than expected.
5 years. After about 2 hours of work, I decided to call it a day. 5 years. Although the scans were good, I was dissatisfied with the scanner's life and replaced it with a better Canon model.
